Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Nick Van Exel scored 11 of his 27 points in the final 38 seconds to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 107-101 victory over his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers.

Playing all but one minute, Van Exel gave the Nuggets the lead for good, 99-96, when he nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing with 37 seconds remaining.

"I've said this a dozen times. When the game's on the line, there's not anybody else I'd rather have the ball than Nick," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "He hit a huge 3-pointer that was the turning point because they had to foul from there."

Kobe Bryant, who collected 38 points and 10 rebounds after missing four games with a sprained ankle, had a chance to tie it, but his 3-pointer from the left side bounced off the rim. Van Exel made a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to give Denver a 101-96 advantage.

Shaquille O'Neal missed a free throw, but several players were in the lane and the second attempt and officals called a jump ball, which Los Angeles won. Rick Fox sank a 21-footer to cut the deficit to 101-99 with 24 seconds left.

"We had our chances," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I thought we made poor judgments down the stretch. It's a very disappointing loss. It's a game we shouldn't have lost. We had so many guys with open looks, it's disappointing that we didn't make them."

After getting fouled on the inbounds pass, Van Exel again made two free throws to give the Nuggets a four-point lead.

"It's always a great win when you beat the World Champs," he said. "We just need to be more consistent at winning, regardless of what team it is we're playing. Free throws were big for us. We made free throws in the second half."

Brian Shaw missed five of his first six shots but hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to pull Los Angeles within 103-101 with 16 seconds left. Three seconds later, Van Exel made two more from the line.

The Lakers had a pair of chances to cut into the deficit, but Shaw's 3-pointer bounced off the rim and Bryant's attempt fell short into Van Exel's hands. Van Exel's last pair of free throws came with 3.5 seconds left as Denver won for the second time in three games following a four-game skid.

Despite getting 23 points and 11 rebounds from O'Neal, the Lakers had a four-game winning streak snapped.

"This was one of the most disappointing losses of the season," O'Neal said. "We couldn't stop anybody down the stretch. We couldn't hit any shots and we sure couldn't play defense. We shouldn't have let this one get away."

Van Exel also had 11 assists while Antonio McDyess posted his 44th double-double with 14 points and 16 boards. The Nuggets won both of their home meetings with the Lakers for the first time since the 1978-79 season.

Bryant made 8-of-12 shots and had 17 points in the first half, helping Los Angeles build a 57-51 lead.

Fox had eight points and eight assists and gave the Lakers their biggest lead, 65-55, when he made a layup with 8:32 left in the third quarter. Voshon Lenard, who finished with 12points, responded with successive 3-pointers to pull the Nuggets within 65-61 with 7:11 left.

The Lakers held a 79-75 lead at the end of the period, but the Nuggets started the fourth quarter with a 6-1 spurt and grabbed an 81-80 edge on Van Exel's layup with 9:11 to play.

Neither team led by more than two points in the final period until Van Exel's 3-pointer made it 99-96. The score was tied five times in the quarter.
