Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Baron Davis put an end to one streak while extending another.

Davis broke out of an 0-for-15 slump from beyond the arc with four 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 28 points as the surging Charlotte Hornets defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 105-99, for their sixth straight win.

Toni Kukoc's basket with 5 1/2 minutes to play gave Atlanta a 93-89 lead before Davis went to work. He hit back-to-back 3-pointers along with a pair of free throws to put the Hornets ahead, 97-93, with 3:42 to play.

A free throw by Kukoc pulled the Hawks within 101-97 with 1:26 remaining, but Davis answered with a long 3-pointer over the outstretched arm of rookie Hanno Mottola for a 104-97 lead with 33 seconds to play.

"I think he senses now how hard he has to work and how focused he has to be," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said of Davis. "He hit rock bottom, and now it's paying dividends."

David Wesley scored 17 points and P.J. Brown added 11 and 13 rebounds for Charlotte, which defeated Atlanta for the sixth time in the last seven meetings.

Davis had 16 points in the fourth quarter to surpass his previous career best of 25, set November 19 in a victory at Detroit.

"They were all rhythm shots and all wide open," Davis said. "I was able to knock them down. They kept switching and I knew I could break them down. (I have been) working on my shot and concentrating on getting in a rhythm and shooting with confidence."

Wesley also had six assists to move past Larry Johnson into second place on the Hornets' all-time list. Wesley has 1,558 assists in a Charlotte uniform.

"It's nice," he said. "It's news to me. It means I've been there a while. I don't know how long I'll stay there. It's nice to be in somebody's record book."

Kukoc scored a season-high 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting while Jason Terry had 26 and seven assists for the Hawks, who have lost six straight.

"We did play a little better," Kukoc said. "We've got to learn how to close the game. It doesn't matter how you play for 3 1/2 quarters if you can't close the game. It comes with experience to know what to do on both ends of the floor."

Nazr Mohammed and Alan Henderson each had 12 points for the Hawks, who went down to their fifth straight home loss.

Atlanta took an 87-79 lead on a basket by Mohammed with 10:10 remaining before Charlotte scored 10 of the next 16 points, including four by Davis.

Kukoc had six points as the Hawks closed the third quarter with a 10-3 spurt to take an 81-73 lead into the final period.
