Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn and the Charlotte Hornets set the tone from the start.

Mashburn scored 16 of his 27 points in the first quarter as the Hornets matched a season-high seven-game winning streak with a 116-97 victory over the Boston Celtics.

The Hornets' best offensive player, Mashburn created plenty of problems for the Celtics from the opening tap, making 6-of-8 shots from the field in the opening quarter.

"He makes it so much better. He can push it inside or take a fallaway shot that he hits most of the time," Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "He's just really finding himself right now. The most important thing is he's finding a way to fit into this puzzle. He gets along well with his teammates and he's becoming our go-to guy."

Led by Mashburn's offensive assault, the Hornets shot 70 percent (14-of-20) in the first quarter, when they opened a 39-32 lead.

"It was important for us to get off to a quick start," Mashburn said. "(We) just play basketball. It's as simple as that. Everything else just comes together."

Baron Davis added 24 points and David Wesley 22 for Charlotte, which recorded its biggest offensive output of the season and moved within three games of first-place Milwaukee in the Central Division.

"We've been finding ways to win and we know we can score, but now we're really putting it together on defense," Davis said. "And we're shooting the ball with confidence."

Antoine Walker had 27 points and 10 rebounds and Paul Pierce scored 24 points for the Celtics, who squandered an opportunity to close ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race and remained 1 1/2 games behind Indiana for the final spot.

Despite their lack of defense in the opening quarter, the Celtics still were within 41-38 with 9:43 left in the half on a follow shot by Vitaly Potapenko.

But P.J. Brown, who had 12 points and 15 rebounds, scored four points as did Davis in an 8-0 run that pushed the lead to double figures.

The advantage grew to 64-48 at halftime behind 20 points from Mashburn and 17 from Davis. That duo combined to make 12-of-18 shots in the half.

Elden Campbell added 16 points for the Hornets, who had all five starters in double figures. Charlotte shot 53 percent (38-of-73) and made 9-of-16 shots from 3-point range.

After the big opening half, the Hornets made sure that effort would not go to waste in the second half, leading by at least 12 points the entire way.

"They shot great. When you shoot that type of percentage from the floor, you're going to get a `W,'" Walker said. "We just didn't put enough pressure on them. Every time we made a spurt, they just fired right back and it's hard to start making runs when you look up at the clock and you're down 23."

Bryant Stith nailed a 3-pointer from left sideline with 7:52 left in the third quarter to help Boston close to 71-59.

However, Charlotte put the game out of reach by reeling off the next 10 points. Wesley, who had six points in the burst, capped it with a 21-footer for an 81-59 bulge with 4:55 left in the period.

Walker and Pierce were the only players to score in double figures for Boston, which shot 44 percent (37-of-84) and was outrebounded, 43-35.

"We didn't do it today. They just made runs we couldn't stop," Pierce said. "When they have guys like Mashburn, Davis and Wesley playing like they did tonight, I don't even think the Lakers could have beaten them. They have a lot of weapons, they're just a hard team to stop."
