Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 30 points and John Stockton added 22 and eight assists as the Utah Jazz won their sixth straight over the lowly Atlanta Hawks, 109-102.

With the contest knotted at 93-93 with 5:51 left, the Jazz held the Hawks to just two baskets down the stretch and outscored the Hawks 16-7 to seal their 20th road win of the season.

The victory moved Utah within one-half game of Portland for the best record in the Western Conference. The Jazz also improved to 11-3 in the second game of back-to-back contests.

"It was a tough game," Stockton said. "I thought that at the end, we took care of it defensively, which gave us an opportunity offensively."

Toni Kukoc led Atlanta with 24 points and eight assists in his first start since being acquired in the deal that sent Dikembe Mutombo to Philadelphia at the trade deadline. But he could not stop the Hawks from dropping their eighth consecutive game.

"We did score points, but we cannot make a couple of stops down the stretch," Kukoc said. "If you want to win games, you have to do those things."

All five Atlanta starters finished in double figures for the fourth time this season. The Hawks have lost them all.

Atlanta also dropped its sixth straight home game and fell to 0-13 when allowing more than 100 points.

"The same old story is getting a little old," said Hawks guard Jason Terry, who scored 21 points. "We're just going to go out and play every night as hard as we can. We're going to win one."

The Hawks pulled within 103-100 with 2:10 left when Kukoc hit a 3-pointer from the left side.

But Malone took over, feeding Donyell Marshall in the low post for a dunk and sinking a 17-footer for a 107-100 lead, effectively icing the contest with 68 seconds to go.

"Whenever you have guys executing what they have to do, you feel obligated to get them ball," Malone said. "Down the stretch, Marshall was going to slip to the basket and I was able to find him. So there are a lot of options off the pick-and-roll."

Stockton sank two 3-pointers in the final 45 seconds of the second quarter to help lift Utah to a 58-51 halftime lead. The 10-time All-Star contributed 11 points in the period.

But the Hawks fought back. Kukoc converted a pair of free throws to cap an 8-2 burst as the Hawks knotted the game at 70-70 with 5:52 left in the third quarter.

"The battle in the third quarter was outstanding, and midway through the fourth, we were right there," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "We just need to figure out how to make that next step.

"We were trying to take that step tonight against Malone and Stockton -- two guys that are two of the best finishers in the game. Maybe we can take something from that for the next one."

John Starks made 5-of-6 in the first eight minutes of the game for 10 of his 14 points. He capped the stretch with a six-foot jumper, giving the Jazz a 20-19 lead.

But Brevin Knight collected his third assist of the opening quarter for the Hawks with 4.9 seconds remaining, feeding DerMarr Johnson on the right sideline for a 3-pointer that tied it at 24-24 after 12 minutes.
