Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Corey Maggette continued his pattern of coming up big down the stretch, scoring all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 99-86 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Maggette, who had 12 of his career-high 23 points in the final period in Friday's victory over Sacramento, was a pivitol performer off the bench as the Clippers outscored Denver, 32-12, in the fourth quarter to win for the sixth time in their last nine outings.

"In the first half, I was kind of cold, but the second half, I loosened up," Maggette said. "We started to run and play hard defense.

"We are starting to mature more, taking our time and starting to make more plays. They made the errors. We continued to run down and score the ball."

Nick Van Exel's basket with 6:27 left in the fourth quarter gave the Nuggets an 82-77 lead before Los Angeles went on a 20-2 run over the next six minutes, taking a 97-84 advantage on two free throws by Keyon Dooling with 39 seconds remaining.

"I think we had some crucial turnovers late in the game that led to some easy baskets," said Van Exel, who had 14 points but committed six turnovers. "We just didn't do a good job protecting the ball and that makes it tough to win games. I take the blame for tonight because coach called my number and I didn't respond."

Lamar Odom had 27 points and seven rebounds and Jeff McInnis added 14 points for the Clippers, who have won four of their last five home games.

"This is a good win for us. Obviously, our goal is to try win as many home games," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "One of the things we are trying to establish as a team is that every time we step out on the court here at home we want to try to win regardless of the competition."

Mark Strickland scored 16 points and Kevin Willis had 15 and nine rebounds for Denver, which suffered its eighth straight road loss. The Nuggets have dropped 12 of their last 13 away from home and are seven games behind Minnesota for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Denver played without All-Star forward Antonio McDyess, who dislocated his left kneecap in Saturday's loss to the Phoenix Suns.

"I think our team is playing hurt," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "Anytime you lose a player who puts up 20 points a night, it hurts. But I thought we played well. Just not enough of our guys stepped up."

Without McDyess, the Nuggets were outscored, 58-48, in the paint but managed to hold a 40-28 edge in rebounding.

"We missed McDyess's inside scoring," Van Exel said. "We really feed off him and when we didn't have him to go to, it's tough in the middle."

Maggette's jumper gave Los Angeles a 32-23 advantage with 10:17 left in the second quarter, but the Nuggets went on a 30-9 surge to go ahead, 53-41, with 2:49 remaining.

The Clippers made things closer before halftime, finishing the quarter with a 10-4 spurt to enter the locker room trailing, 57-51.

Denver's bench outscored Los Angeles', 31-6, in the first half. However, the Clippers' reserved had 29 points in the second half, compared to 10 for the Nuggets' bench players.

"Our bench has done that the whole year," Gentry said. "We've had the No. 1 bench in the NBA for most of the season."

After trailing throughout the third quarter, Los Angeles started the fourth with a 16-8 run to take an 83-82 lead -- its first since midway through the second quarter -- with 5:02 left on Darius Miles' driving layup.

Van Exel's turnover led to another dunk by Miles. After Strickland dunked, Odom hit a 3-pointer and the Clippers took advantage of a turnover by Van Exel as Maggette dunked on the other end for a 90-84 advantage with 2:23 left.

Raef LaFrentz dribbled the ball off his foot and was forced to foul Miles, who converted one of two shots from the free-throw line. Dooling scored six points in three trips to the foul line in the last two minutes, the last of which gave the Clippers their largest lead, 97-84, with 39 seconds to go.

Dooling finished with eight points, as did Michael Olowokandi, who grabbed seven rebounds. Eric Piatkowski chipped in 11 points for Los Angeles, which shot 56.5 percent (39-for-69) from the field and scored 25 points off 16 turnovers.

Robert Pack scored 11 points and LaFrentz had nine and nine rebounds for the Nuggets, who shot 43 percent (33-for-76), making 3-of-11 (27 percent) from 3-point range.
