Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat survived a battle of 3-pointers in the closing moments and completed a season sweep of the Detroit Pistons with an 87-84 victory.

Bruce Bowen sank a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers, the second of which gave the Heat an 82-78 lead with 43 seconds left. But Chucky Atkins answered with a 3-pointer to get Detroit within a point.

With the shot clock winding down on the ensuing possession, Dan Majerle buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key to restore Miami's four-point lead with 14.3 seconds to play.

"Bruce hit a three to put us up four and then Danny hit another three to put us up four," Riley said. "We are very fortunate to win the game, but we kept making plays to win the game and that is what this is all about."

The Pistons cut the deficit to a point with 7.8 seconds left when Jerry Stackhouse hit a 3-pointer from the left corner. But after Tim Hardaway sank a pair of free throws, Stackhouse missed an open 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"You can't be too upset about this," said Atkins, who scored nine points. "We played just as well as they did. It's just that they made the big shot. We were one shot away from winning."

The miss gave Miami its fourth win in as many meetings with Detroit this season and their first season sweep over the Pistons since the 1996-97 campaign.

"This game was like all the other ones with Detroit," said Miami coach Pat Riley, whose team swept the Pistons in three games in the first round of last season's Eastern Conference playoffs. "It was a war right down to the wire."

But the victory came at a cost as guard Eddie Jones dislocated his left shoulder in the second quarter and is out indefinitely.

"It is disappointing from the standpoint of Eddie," Riley said. "Hopefully, he won't be out too long."

In Jones' absence, Bowen and Majerle totaled four 3-pointers and 22 points. Each played at least 35 minutes.

While Miami sealed the win from beyond the arc, it also dominated inside, with forwards Brian Grant and Anthony Mason combining for 39 points and 25 rebounds.

"Brian Grant and Anthony Mason are (excellent) at getting position," Stackhouse said. "And both of them are just as hard to move as anything."

Hardaway added 16 points for the Heat, who have won three straight games to move two in front of the archrival New York Knicks for the third seed in the East.

Stackhouse scored 32 points, but the Pistons suffered their fifth loss in six games and fell 5 1/2 games behind Indiana for the final playoff spot in the East.

Detroit led by as many as eight points in the first quarter, but Mason and Grant had seven apiece as Miami ended the period tied at 25-25.

The second quarter was tight throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points.

Behind 13 points from Mason and 11 by Grant, the Heat took a 49-46 edge into the locker room. A 16-footer by Hardaway with 27 seconds left in the half gave Miami the lead for good, 47-46.

Grant had nine points in the third and Mason added six, helping the Heat take a 72-64 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Miami's big men toyed with the Pistons, who were playing without forward Joe Smith due to a sprained ankle. Forwards Corliss Williamson and Michael Curry also battled foul trouble.

"I like the fact that we hung in the game with them the whole way, considering foul trouble and considering Joe Smith not playing," Pistons coach George Irvine said.

Miami went the first 3:02 of the fourth without a point but Detroit was unable to cut into the lead. The Heat still led by eight, 74-66, when Anthony Carter set up Cedric Ceballos for a dunk.

Another Heat scoring drought allowed the Pistons back into the game. Detroit scored five straight points to close within 74-71 with 7:14 to play.

Bowen then exchanged 3-pointers with Mateen Cleaves and hit a 15-footer for a 79-74 lead with 4:53 remaining. But the Heat went scoreless for more than four minutes, allowing the Pistons to creep within a point.

Williamson hit a basket to get Detroit within 79-76 with 3:36 left and Stackhouse sank a layup 80 seconds later to make it 79-78.

But Bowen hit his second 3-pointer of the period with 43.5 seconds left and the Heat held on.

"In a game, you take chances on different guys beating you," Atkins said. "Tonight, we took a chance on Bruce Bowen beating us and he hit a big shot."

Bowen scored 10 points and Majerle added 12 for Miami, which shot just 39 percent from the field (32-of-82), going 5-of-22 from 3-point range.

Williamson had 17 points for the Pistons, who shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69), hitting 6-of-16 from behind the arc.
