Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Milwaukee Bucks swept the season series from the New Jersey Nets for the first time with a 107-100 victory.

The loss overshadowed rookie Kenyon Martin's first career triple-double. Martin finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists.

The Bucks built a 58-41 lead at halftime behind 13 points from Ray Allen and 12 from Glenn Robinson. Milwaukee outscored the Nets, 18-8, in the final 4:25 of the half.

New Jersey used a spirited rally in the third quarter to grab a 68-67 lead on a dunk by Martin with 3:17 to play. But the Bucks scored the final six points of the period, including four by Scott Williams, for a 77-74 lead.

Five straight points by Cassell gave Milwaukee a 90-79 lead with 6:40 to play and a 3-pointer by Allen that just beat the shot clock made it 95-84 with 2 1/2 minutes left.

"There were stretches where we played great basketball and there were times when we missed shots and didn't play defense," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "In the fourth quarter, we responded well but didn't finish it up with very much class."

Allen scored 23 points and Robinson had 18 for Milwaukee, which won all four games against the Nets this season. The Bucks made 19-of-24 free throws (79 percent), including 7-of-9 by Cassell, a former Net.

"This is one of those games that we are lucky to have won," Allen said. "We were clearly better and we clearly played a better game. I think we knocked the life out of them early but then they came back in the third quarter."

New Jersey native Tim Thomas scored 14 points after sitting out the Bucks' previous two games with back spasms.

Martin's performance included career highs in both rebounds and assists. He made 7-of-16 shots in 45 minutes and had three blocks.

"The kid has been fantastic," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "He is getting better and better. His understanding of the game for a rookie is phenomenal. He is playing the best ball of his life."

"It was good personally, but we lost," Martin said. "If I had a triple-double and we won, it would have been better."

Stephon Marbury led New Jersey with 20 points but made just 5-of-20 shots. Lucious Harris added 17 points and Aaron Williams had 16 for the Nets, who had a three-game home winning streak halted.

"I didn't see anyone out there with any energy except Kenyon," Scott said. "Everyone looked like they were just going through their motions. You can't get down and expect to catch up. That will come back and bite you in the butt."

New Jersey has won six of its last eight home games.
