Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves won for the first time in Charlotte as Kevin Garnett collected 22 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists in a 95-89 victory over the Hornets, who had a seven-game winning streak snapped.

The Timberwolves, who had been 0-11 in Charlotte, built a 21-point third-quarter lead and held off a late charge by the Hornets.

"(Assistant coach) Jerry Sichting told us about that (0-11) at the shootaround and it stuck in our minds," Garnett said. "The future is bright and we are just trying to change things."

Charlotte climbed within three points on three occasions, including at 80-77 with 5:09 remaining on a 3-pointer by Jamal Mashburn. But Chauncey Billups nailed two key 3-pointers as Minnesota scored eight of the next 12 points for an 88-81 lead with under three minutes left.

"We played so well early and I figured we couldn't sustain that but you have to hand it to Charlotte for not giving up and finding ways to come back," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We kept our poise, moved the ball well and made some big shots."

A 3-pointer by Baron Davis pulled the Hornets within 90-87 with 61 seconds left. But LaPhonso Ellis' jumper just beat the shot clock 24 seconds later and Billups added a free throw for a 93-87 advantage with 20 seconds left.

"Billups was the key with four 3-pointers," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "That broke our back. They hit big shots at the end and deserved to win."

Wally Szczerbiak scored 16 points for the Timberwolves, who entered the NBA in 1989 and never had won in Charlotte Coliseum.

David Wesley scored 21 points and Davis added 17 and nine assists for Charlotte, which enjoyed a 41-34 rebounding edge. P.J. Brown had 10 boards and Jamaal Magloire added nine.

The Hornets shot 43 percent (36-of-83) from the field and made 8-of-16 from beyond the arc, including three apiece by Wesley and Davis.

"Their energy was a lot better," Brown said. "They set the tempo for the whole night. They got in a rhythm and we couldn't break it."

The Timberwolves shot 53 percent (40-of-76) and registered 33 assists, including eight by Szczerbiak.

"We're very unselfish and played the game the way it is supposed to be played," Szczerbiak said. "A lot of guys stepped up and made big shots. We finally snapped our drought here and were able to break their winning streak as well."

Minnesota opened a 31-19 lead at the end of one quarter behind 10 points from Garnett and eight from Szczerbiak.

"Their 31 points in the first quarter put us in a hole," Silas said. "From that point, you have to play perfect basketball to have a chance to catch up and win."

A 7-0 run to begin the second half gave Minnesota its largest lead, 57-36, on a tip-in by Garnett with just under 10 minutes left in the third period.

Charlotte rallied with an 11-1 run capped by a pair of baskets by Brown to climb within 58-47 with 7:08 to go. The Hornets crept within 66-61 on a three-point play by Davis with 2:19 to play before Minnesota took a 70-64 lead into the final period.
