Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Tom Gugliotta scored a season-high 25 points off the bench as the Phoenix Suns welcomed back Shawn Marion and picked up their seventh straight victory over the shorthanded Denver Nuggets, 93-82.

Marion made 10-of-12 shots and finished with 22 points and nine rebounds after missing the previous three games with a scary concussion suffered in a win over Utah on February 25.

"Shawn Marion was very good," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "He was active and used his quickness to score and get rebounds. It's good to have him back. Gugliotta played very well. He was active but got tired in the end."

Denver played without starters Antonio McDyess and Nick Van Exel. McDyess, an All-Star forward who dislocated his left kneecap in Saturday's loss at Phoenix, is listed as day-to-day. Van Exel, the starting point guard and Denver's best clutch player, sat out with stiffness in his knee after bumping it in Monday's loss at the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I was pleased with the effort," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "They didn't quit and I thought the defense was good tonight. It's tough to get open shots when they don't have to worry about Nick or Antonio but it's part of basketball."

Back-to-back baskets by Mark Strickland pulled Denver within 27-21 with 9 1/2 minutes to play in the second quarter. Phoenix used a 9-2 run, capped by a jumper from Tony Delk, to build a 36-23 lead.

A basket by Gugliotta gave the Suns a 53-35 lead at the break.

A 10-0 run featuring six points from Marion gave Phoenix its largest lead, 67-41, with 6 1/2 minutes left in the third period.

"We'll take the gift of their two guys not playing," Gugliotta said. "Van Exel scores a lot of points and comes up big in the fourth quarter."

Gugliotta made 9-of-17 shots and converted all seven free throws in 35 minutes. Jason Kidd had eight points, 10 assists and eight rebounds for Phoenix.

The Nuggets never got closer than the final margin and lost for the 16th time in the last 17 meetings with Phoenix. The Suns won all four matchups in 2000-01, sweeping the season series for the third time in four years.

"I don't feel sorry for teams without key players," Skiles said. "We spent 1 1/2 seasons without key players. But they are different without McDyess and Van Exel."

Robert Pack led Denver with 22 points while George McCloud added 17 off the bench on 5-of-16 shooting.

"It was real tough tonight trying to play without any previous playing time together," said Pack. "It was common knowledge that we had to bring up our intensity without McDyess and Van Exel."

Denver's starting frontcourt of James Posey, Kevin Willis and Raef LaFrentz shot a combined 6-of-20 for a total of 14 points. Willis grabbed eight rebounds but was assessed a technical foul in the midst of Phoenix's big second quarter.

"We have to play smarter, especially when those two were out," Willis said. "We're struggling right now but we need to take the next 19 games and play them like our last."
