Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The way the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers are playing, it seems that neither team wants to claim the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Despite shutting down All-Stars Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson, the Celtics missed another opportunity to pick up ground on the Pacers, suffering a 101-94 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Boston held Allen and Robinson to a combined 6-of-23 shooting, but remained one game behind the Pacers, who again lost to New York and have dropped four straight.

Boston fell to 1-2 on a crucial five-game homestand and is just 2-7 in its last nine contests. The Celtics are two games behind Indiana in the loss column.

"Luck's been good to us the past month or so," Boston forward Paul Pierce said. "We finally got Indiana to lose two straight and we couldn't take advantage of it."

Allen was only 1-of-10 from the field and did not make his first basket until drilling a 3-pointer with 3:30 left that gave the Bucks a 92-80 cushion. He scored 14 points, making 11-of-13 from the line.

"He had 14 points, nine rebounds," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "You (media) guys can write that he had a bad night. But I think that's a compliment to Ray Allen."

Robinson converted only 5-of-17 shots and finished with just 10 points, more than 12 below his team-leading average of 22.6.

But Sam Cassell and Tim Thomas picked up the slack for Allen and Robinson, scoring 24 and 22 points, respectively.

"I knew they were going to double Sam and Glenn in the post," Thomas said. "They didn't double me in the post and I just felt comfortable shooting the ball."

Boston's problem was just the opposite. It got big games from the top guns as Antoine Walker scored 36 points and Paul Pierce added 30, marking the eighth time the duo combined for more 60 points. They also recorded double-doubles with 11 and 10 rebounds.

But Walker and Pierce got little help from their teammates, combining for more than two-thirds of the Celtics' points and taking 51 of Boston's 80 shots.

Amazingly, the Celtics' other three starters did not score, attempting just six shots. Chris Carr added 11 points off the bench.

"It's a team game," Pierce said. "We need other guys to step up."

"Our guys do the best they're capable of doing," Walker countered. "That wasn't the reason why we lost this game."

Boston briefly went ahead, 53-52, on Walker's jumper from the top of the key with 8:14 left in the third quarter. But Milwaukee made three 3-pointers -- two by Thomas and one by Lindsey Hunter -- in a 71-second span late in the period to take control. Hunter's 3-pointer gave the Bucks a 72-64 edge with 47 left.

"I thought we played well," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "I didn't see many defensively breakdowns. I was not disappointed in our overall effort. There's no disgrace losing to the Milwaukee Bucks."

Walker hit consecutive 3-pointers before Pierce made a jumper to pull the Celtics within 93-88 with 1:45 left. Boston could get no closer.

"I thought we did a good job defensively inside the 3-point line," Karl said. "Walker had a lot of points but he also took a lot of shots (14-of-28)."

After allowing the game's first seven points, the Celtics roared back, grabbing a 16-9 lead on Pierce's 3-pointer with 4:15 left in the first quarter. But Milwaukee went ahead early in the second quarter and nursed a 45-44 lead at the half.
