Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- It took the Dallas Mavericks 10 years to win in Miami. It took the Heat one game to realize how much they are going to miss Eddie Jones.

Michael Finley and Dirk Nowitzki made clutch 3-pointers down the stretch and the Mavericks defeated the Heat, 93-86, for their first win in Miami since 1991.

In less than two minutes, the outside shooting of Finley and Nowitzki turned a one-point game into an 86-78 cushion with 3:24 remaining. Steve Nash made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 90 seconds and Dallas held on, ending a 10-game skid here dating to December 10, 1991.

"I don't really think about that anymore," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson, whose team has not made the playoffs since 1990. "I just think about this year. I don't think teams think about history very much. We have a sense of history, I do know about that."

Nowitzki scored 29 points, Nash added 19 and Finley and Juwan Howard had 16 apiece for the Mavs, who gained a split of their two-game Florida swing and have won seven of the last 10 games.

While Finley was bombing away, Miami could have used Jones, a solid two-way guard who is out at least 10 days and likely much longer with a dislocated left shoulder suffered Monday against Detroit.

"They miss his presence out there," said Mavericks forward Juwan Howard. "He is a guy who is a versatile guard who can defend as well. He's been a big force for them on both sides of the court and they'll miss him."

"I don't think that it affected us," countered Heat coach Pat Riley. "We just ran into a very talented team."

The Heat also missed Jones' team-leading 18.7 points per game. Dan Majerle started for him and managed three points on 1-of-7 shooting, also struggling on defense.

"I made my first one," Majerle said. "Then I missed some shots I should have made. It was just one of those games."

Anthony Mason had 25 points and 15 rebounds for Miami, which had a three-game winning streak snapped and was swept by Dallas for the first time since the 1989-90 season.

The Mavs squandered an early 12-point lead and led just 67-66 entering the fourth quarter. They took the lead for good at 75-74 on a basket by Nash with 6:56 remaining.

Dallas still was clinging to a 77-76 lead when Finley launched a 3-pointer from the right sideline with 5:16 to go. After a dunk by Mason, Nowitzki beat the shot clock with a 3-pointer for an 83-78 lead at the four-minute mark.

"If you look at his shots tonight, it wasn't like he was breaking down people and then putting up 3-pointers," Miami forward Bruce Bowen said. "He was spotting up in the corner. It was a total lapse on our behalf trying to find him."

Mason missed a hook and Finley made Miami pay with another shot from the arc for an eight-point lead. The Heat got no closer than five points thereafter.

Mavs 7-6 center Shawn Bradley was a presence with 14 rebounds and nine blocks. Dallas shot 54.5 percent (36-of-66) from the field, including 7-of-14 from the arc, and held Miami to 43 percent (38-of-88) and 4-of-13 from 3-point range.

"That was a pressure situation and don't think the beads of perspiration weren't forming on my brow because I needed Shawn in there to guard the rim," Nelson said.

Brian Grant scored 23 points and Bowen added 16 for the Heat. However, they combined with Mason to account for all but 22 of Miami's points. Guard Tim Hardaway shot 1-of-9 for five points.

"We didn't make enough shots," Majerle said. "I shot bad and Tim shot bad."

Nowitzki scored 10 points in the first quarter, when the Mavs led by 12 points before settling for a 28-18 advantage. The Heat closed to 46-40 at halftime and within one after the third quarter.
