Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers are playing without their leader, and it shows.

In their first game since Lamar Odom was suspended for violating the NBA's substance abuse policy, the Clippers' offense was non-existant down the stretch and the Houston Rockets had a huge fourth quarter en route to a 99-87 victory over Los Angeles.

The Clippers led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter and had a 76-67 advantage heading into the final period. But the Rockets scored 15 of the first 16 points in the quarter.

"Obviously, it would have helped to have Odom in there," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We had good shots, but they didn't go in and that really put pressure on our defense."

After Michael Olokowandi sank a free throw for Los Angeles with 11:06 remaining, the Rockets ran off 14 straight points. Steve Francis began the run with a layup and Carlos Rogers scored six straight points to get Houston within 77-75 at 7:55.

"We all contributed in the fourth quarter, especially Carlos," Francis said. "He sparked us."

Cuttino Mobley sank the tying jumper on the Rockets' next possession and they grabbed the lead for good on a layup by Francis with 6:51 to go. Mobley capped the run with a three-point play and Corey Maggette finally sank a pair of free throws for Los Angeles with just over five minutes remaining.

Houston made 9-of-18 shots from the floor and 13-of-14 from the line over the final 12 minutes en route to its 12th win in 15 games.

In his second game back from injury, Mobley scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and made all 14 of his free throws, including 10 in the final period. He was just 4-of-15 from the field.

"I was missing shots early because of my ankle," Mobley said of the injury that kept him sidelined. "It was sore, but when you need something you have to look past the soreness. Steve helped us come back. I just finished it off."

"Mobley played great, but really it was Francis who controlled the game," Gentry said. "He finds the open guys and he makes things happen."

Francis had 22 points, a season-high 15 rebounds and eight assists. Maurice Taylor added 21 points and nine rebounds after missing the last game with an injured Achilles tendon and Walt Williams scored 11 points off the bench for the Rockets, who climbed within three games of idle Phoenix for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

"We are developing confidence as we go on," Francis said. "It seems like we have a go-to guy every night and we keep on winning."

Houston played without Hakeem Olajuwan, who left the first quarter of Wednesday's victory at Atlanta with a strained right calf muscle.

Los Angeles missed its first 10 shots of the fourth quarter and did not make one from the field until Eric Piatkowski sank a jumper with 4:13 left. The Clippers were just 4-of-20 in the period and outscored, 32-11.

"It's hard to win a game when you only score 11 points in the fourth quarter," Gentry said. "Obviously, that is what killed us. We just went through that stretch where we couldn't score."

Jeff McInnis scored 20 points but had just one in the final quarter. Maggette had 19 points and 12 rebounds -- eight offensive -- and Olokowandi added 11 points for Los Angeles, which has lost 31 of the last 34 meetings with the Rockets.
