Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki scored 32 points and Juwan Howard added 15 and nine rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks cruised to a 102-73 romp over the Golden State Warriors.

Nowitzki scored 15 points and Michael Finley added 10 of his 12 in the first half, when Dallas built a 52-43 lead it never relinquished. Nowitzki made a free throw with 2:55 to go in the third period that capped a 16-2 run and pushed the lead to 70-53.

Shawn Bradley grabbed a season-high 20 rebounds -- two short of his career high -- as Dallas won for the fifth time in six games and reduced its magic number for clinching a playoff spot to 17. The Mavericks have not been to the postseason since 1990, the longest current drought in the league.

"I just had to try to go out and do what my team needed me to do," said Bradley, who also scored 12 points and blocked five shots. "We just worked hard. I guess all that's a product of just trying to come in and do what the team needs you to do."

Antawn Jamison had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Marc Jackson added 15 for Golden State, which has lost five straight games, 13 of 14 and owns the worst record in the Western Conference.

"I thought we played a pretty good game," Golden State coach Dave Cowens said. "We were hard-nosed and played good defense. And at the end, it was an embarrassment."

Steve Nash and Finley each had 12 points and seven assists and Dallas shot 42 percent (38-of-91) and defeated Golden State for the eighth straight time, including three this season.

"We have to take care of the teams that are sub-.500 and are out of the playoff race," Nash said. "You can't afford to lose one of these games. It was a big game for us because Golden State is dangerous."

Nowitzki missed all three of his shots from behind the arc but used his speed to beat Jackson and knocked down 14-of-17 free throws. Nowitzki scored 13 points in the first quarter, when the Mavericks shot 52 percent (13-of-25) and grabbed a 34-23 lead.

"It really worked out well," Nowitzki said. "In the first half we started out well, but they kind of found a way to stick in the game with loose balls and offensive rebounds. We knew we had to turn it up because they could come back in the game with a couple of threes. We started pressing them and started scrambling a little bit. It worked great and won the game."

Golden State hung around in the second period and scored five straight points, closing within 48-42 when Jackson made 1-of-2 free throws 65 seconds before halftime. But Bradley responded with a pair from the line and Howard followed with a basket before Bob Sura made one free throw and the Warriors faced a 52-43 deficit at the break.

"They did a good job. They went on a good run," Jackson said. "With all the weapons they have, they were able to keep doing that. They are a great team and a good team to watch out for. We just didn't capitalize, they made a run on us, but we didn't come back and make a run on them."

The Warriors got within 54-49 on a jumper by Jackson with 9:32 left in the third quarter. Nash answered with a layup and Dallas followed with eight consecutive points to take a 62-49 lead on Nowitzki's 18-footer with 6:58 left.

Nowitzki had a pair of three-point plays around two free throws in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 90-67 with 5:25 left, enabling Dallas to empty its bench. Mark Bryant, who had appeared in just 16 games, made a layup to make it 96-67 with 2:36 remaining.

Gary Trent hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 97-67 bulge with 1:51 left, bringing cheers of "Chalupa" from the crowd. Vernon Maxwell gave the sellout crowd of 18,187 what they wanted with a 3-pointer that also gave Dallas its biggest lead, 100-69, with 1:15 left.
