Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- It has taken 63 games for the Dallas Mavericks to equal what they accomplished all of last season.

Dirk Nowitzki scored all 22 points in the first half as the Maverivks won their 40th game and fourth in a row, a 111-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Mavericks, who have not made the playoffs since 1990, went 40-42 last season. Dallas also extended their winning streak over Los Angeles to 11 games.

"Well, we had to do it sometime," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "It's pretty early. I never would have dreamed that we'd do it this early but I thought we were going to pass it. I thought we'd probably get maybe 44-45 wins. I didn't think we'd have a chance for 50 like maybe we do, but we keep playing at a high level and you just never know where it's going to lead."

Nowitzki had 13 of his 22 points in the second quarter on "Dirk Nowitzki Night," in which the first 5,000 fans at Reunion Arena received a bobble-head doll of his likeness. The promotion brought a number of Nowitzki's German fans out to the arena, including his sister.

"Of course its nice when somebody from Germany comes over and visits me," Nowitzki said. "I watched the (German polka) band play last night and it's a lot of fun. It's an honor for me that they brought some Germans over."

An 11-0 run in the first quarter, capped by a jumper by Juwan Howard, gave Dallas the lead for good at 16-6 with 7:19 left in the quarter. The Mavericks led 32-23 after one quarter as Howard scored 11 points.

"It's my teammates and the coaching staff and Coach Nelson," Howard said. "They helped make my transition come a lot sooner than expected. I hope I can be consistent and click on all cylinders."

The Mavericks built a 63-50 lead at halftime and extended it to as many as 26 points in the second half. All five Dallas starters sat out the entire fourth quarter.

Howard finished with 20 points, matching his best effort as a Maverick, along with 10 rebounds. Steve Nash added 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

"Steve Nash seemed to control the game," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "He controls the game when we play them."

Michael Finley scored 14 points and Shawn Bradley added 12 and 11 rebounds as Dallas placed all five starters in double figures.

Shawn Bradley grabbed 11 boards for the Mavericks, who enjoyed a 44-38 rebounding edge. Dallas made 6-of-9 3-pointers, including two apiece by Nowitzki and Nash.

"We quick-shot the ball," Gentry said. "We didn't make smart plays. It started early in the game and it just carried over."

Los Angeles was led by rookie Quentin Richardson, who scored 15 points off the bench. Corey Maggette scored 14 points despite 2-of-12 shooting and Michael Olowokandi added 13 for the Clippers, who have lost six straight in Dallas.

"I think this is the most difficult team to play against," Maggette said. "They have so many shooters on the floor, and when they drive the ball, if you try to help, you leave open a Michael Finley or a Dirk Nowitzki."

The Clippers played once again without the suspended Lamar Odom, who served the second game of his five-game suspension for violating the league's anti-drug policy.
