Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- So much for the Indiana Pacers building some momentum.

For the third time in less than a week, the Pacers failed to take advantage of a loss by the Boston Celtics and suffered a 95-78 defeat to the Detroit Pistons.

After beating Cleveland on Friday to snap a four-game losing slide, the Pacers talked about putting together a winning streak. Instead, Indiana started a three-game road trip with a disappointing effort and remained just one game ahead of the Celtics in the battle for the final Eastern Conference spot.

Jerry Stackhouse scored 33 points and Corliss Williamson added a season-high 26 off the bench for the Pistons (24-39), who have slim playoff hopes themselves despite being 15 games under .500. Although Detroit is just 4-8 in its last 12 contests, the Pistons have won two straight to pull within four games of Indiana.

"The important key has been Corliss," Stackhouse said. "He's added another dimension to our team. He's a real legitimate threat, whether it's on the blocks, facing up or on the break. He's strong enough where he can defend most of the big players."

Williamson was unstoppable inside, making 10-of-12 shots in 31 minutes.

"I'm really in a comfort zone here," he said. "These guys have already figured out where I like the ball and that's where they're getting it to me. That's eveything. Plus, everyone on the team runs the floor every time. That makes it easy to get some points on the fast break."

Williamson has fit right in with the Pistons, averaging 16.5 points in eight games since being acquired from the Toronto Raptors.

"He's given us a huge lift, especially offensively," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "He's our biggest player. It's so nice to see one of our guys got to the hole and have defenders bouncing off him instead of our guys bouncing off defenders."

"If he's gonna shoot 10-of-12 and score 26 points, he's going to make a huge difference," Indiana guard Jalen Rose added. "I think he was basically the difference in today's game, besides our poor shooting."

The Pistons have put together two consecutive strong defensive efforts, drubbing the Chicago Bulls, 108-75, on Friday for their most lopsided win of the season. Detroit held Indiana to just 36.5 percent (31-of-85) shooting.

Reggie Miller (4-of-12), Rose (4-of-18) and Travis Best (3-of-10) were a combined 11-of-40 from the field for the Pacers.

"I thought we had a lot of good looks in a our main three in terms of Reggie, Travis and Jalen," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said. "When we don't shoot the ball well, particularly from those three, it's gonna be a tough night for us. It's a game where you got to make shots. We just could't buy a basket tonight."

Down by 15 points late in the third quarter, the Pacers used a 14-2 run to close to 65-62 on a 3-pointer by Miller with 59 seconds left in the period.

But Detroit pulled away again early in the fourth, stretching its lead to 86-68 on Billy Owens' layup with 6:05 remaining. The Pistons led by as many as 20 points in the final minute.

"This is the most I've ever seen Detroit, in the four games we've played, lock in defensively, especially on me," Miller said. "They were switching out a lot on our motion play. In the games before, I got wide-open looks. Tonight, I always had a hand in my face."

Al Harrington scored 17 points for the Pacers while Miller and Rose were held to just 11 apiece. Indiana scored only 34 points in the second half.

"We actually have done a pretty good job off chasing Reggie off the screen," Irvine said. "Where we did a better job tonight is that our big people helped out. It made it tougher for Reggie to get the ball and they covered each other's back."

Stackhouse surpassed 30 points for the 33rd time this season, helping the Pistons snapped a six-game losing streak against Indiana. Joe Smith and Chucky Atkins scored 14 apiece, while Ben Wallace grabbed 17 rebounds for Detroit.

"Corliss did a good job of coming in off the bench and contributing," Rose said. "But for the most part our offense was stagnant tonight and we weren't able to knock down shots. It was just one of those days."

Jermaine O'Neal recorded his 30th double-double of the season for Indiana with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The loss snapped the Pacers' four-game winning streak in Detroit and prevented Indiana from completing a sweep of the four-game season series.

"We played well all game," Stackhouse said. "I think that we kept the pressure on them."

The Pacers opened a 14-9 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Pistons grabbed a 26-23 lead after the period and stretched their advantage to 49-44 at the half.
