Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn had 28 points, eight rebounds and a career-high 14 assists as the Charlotte Hornets extended their winning streak against the lowly Chicago Bulls to nine games with a 102-94 victory.

Elden Campbell scored a season-high 26 points and added nine boards and five blocked shots as the Hornets won their third straight game and 12th in their last 14.

They also moved within one-half game of New York for fourth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race and within two of front-running Milwaukee in the Central Division.

"It was a good win," guard David Wesley said. "We shared the ball and passed it around. We rebounded pretty well. This puts us in great shape. We're right where we want to be. We need to take care of business and keep playing well."

Brad Miller led Chicago with 22 points and 15 rebounds but could not stop the Bulls from losing their 19th consecutive road game.

P.J. Brown recorded his sixth consecutive double-double for Charlotte, with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The forward also tied Larry Johnson's franchise record with his ninth straight double-figure rebounding performance.

Mashburn scored six points during an 18-0 run, which Campbell capped with a dunk 5:06 into the third quarter, as the Hornets built a 75-52 lead.

The Bulls never threatened therafter, managing to reduce the deficit to single digits only in the final minute of the contest.

"I thought the start of the third quarter was a microcosm of the game," said Bulls coach Tim Floyd, who received his second technical foul with 2:03 left in the third. "We took two contested shots and they took three uncontested shots and made them all."

Campbell not only had five points during the big third-quarter run but also blocked a pair of shots by Elton Brand, who had three turnovers in a 78-second span.

"The only thing I wanted (Brand) to do was shoot over me and be in his way," Campbell said. "He's a competitor and he kept coming at me."

Despite suffering from a back injury, Brand had 18 points, on 6-of-19 shooting, five rebounds and six assists. He also committed six turnovers -- as many as the entire Charlotte team.

"I just try to go out and play," Brand said. "I'm a fighter and a gamer. I don't want to sit one out when I can rebound, play defense and help out."

Mashburn collected 10 points and five assists in the opening 12 minutes as Charlotte shot 64 percent (14-of-22) from the field to jump out to a 35-20 lead.

"Jamal has been playing terrific," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "He is such an unselfish player and he's got a lot of skills. I like his game when he's rebounding and then pushing the ball up the floor like he did tonight."

Mashburn's 14 assists tied a Hornets season high, set against Boston on December 16 by Baron Davis, who had 10 against the Bulls.

Chicago fought back before halftime. The Bulls pieced together a 17-5 run over 5 1/2 minutes to take their only lead of the game, 50-49, with 1:21 left in the second period.

Ron Mercer scored eight of his 20 points in the second quarte. He had missed nine of the previous 10 games with a sprained left ankle.

"Mercer gives us offensive push," Floyd said. "I think he had a fine game for a guy just coming back."

Campbell put home two free throws and a layup as Charlotte finished the half with an 8-2 burst, taking a 57-52 lead into the locker room and foreshadowing its upcoming explosion.
