Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Following their longest losing streak in two decades, the Atlanta Hawks actually have put together a winning streak.

Toni Kukoc recorded his third career triple-double with 20 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds as the Hawks defeated the Vancouver Grizzlies, 109-99.

The Hawks have won two straight for the first time since posting back-to-back wins on February 17-18.

Kukoc was relatively quiet in the first half, when Alan Henderson scored 12 points and Jason Terry added 10 to help Atlanta race to a 54-37 lead at halftime.

After an awful first half, Vancouver shot 60 percent (30-of-50) from the field in the second half and closed within seven in the fourth quarter. Mike Bibby scored all 27 of his points after halftime as the Grizzlies made their second-half surge, but it was not enough.

"We were embarrassed (at halftime)," Bibby said. "I started getting some shots. I think I started to attack more instead of standing back and let them come at me."

Responding to Bibby's assault, Kukoc took control of the offense, drawing the defense and continually finding the open man to give the Hawks easy opportunities to put away the game.

"He definitely opens up the floor and we have a lot more opportunities at the basket," Terry said. "He's creating shots that are high percentage shots, shots that are going to be easy to make."

"My teammates were in the right place at the right time and they knew what to do with it (the ball)," Kukoc said. "We had plenty of guys stepping up tonight."

Kukoc registered the first triple-double for Atlanta since Dikembe Mutumbo -- the player he was traded for earlier this season -- had one on February 15, 2000.

"We're continuing to get a better feel for one another (since the trade)," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "We're getting behind one another, trusting each other a little bit more defensively and I thought that really set the tone for the first half. They came back in the second half and made some shots."

Henderson finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds and Terry scored 22 points. Nazr Mohammed was dominant in the paint with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds -- nine offensive -- for Atlanta.

"Their big people dominated us tonight," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "We had guys come not ready to play physically and mentally."

The Hawks posted their highest point total of the season it front of the smallest crowd ever at Philips Arena.

Atlanta made just 17-of-30 free throws but was 6-of-14 from the arc and held a 51-35 rebounding edge.

Hawks forward Chris Crawford left game with a sprained ankle with 8:49 in the first quarter and did not return.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf scored 14 points for Vancouver, which kicked off a season-long eight-game road trip.
