Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton had 31 points and seven assists and Rashard Lewis added 16 points as the Seattle SuperSonics got back to the .500 mark with a 99-90 victory over the slumping Portland Trail Blazers.

Payton made 11-of-20 shots, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, as Seattle (33-33) knocked off a top team in the Pacific Division for the second straight game and won for just the second time in the last nine meetings with the Trail Blazers.

Payton had 24 points and 11 assists in Sunday's 109-97 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

The SuperSonics shot 49 percent (36-of-73) against Portland and moved within six games of the Minnesota Timerwolves for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Sonics also are 3 1/2 games behind the Houston Rockets.

"The thing is that we've asked them to continue to work and the team has continued to work," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "The effort has been there. Of course, the last two teams that we've played are two of the top teams in the conference and that will motivate you."

Rasheed Wallace recorded 19 points and eight rebounds and Damon Stoudamire added 13 and seven assists for the Blazers, who have a season-high four-game losing streak. Portland shot 47 percent (32-of-68), but fell one half-game behind the Lakers for second place in the Pacific Division.

Wallace did not receive a technical foul, but he did commit four of Portland's 21 turnovers that led to 21 points for Seattle.

"I thought throughout the game we had some careless turnovers that turned into easy baskets on the other end." Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "That put a lot of pressure on our defense especially in the first half and we rallied and got ourselves close, we just didn't do a very good job on execution allowing them to get some easy baskets."

Ruben Patterson came off the bench and scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half when the Sonics shot 51 percent (20-of-39) and took a 53-48 lead.

Seattle scored the first six points of the third quarter, pushing the margin to 59-48 when Payton hit a 3-pointer with 9:01 remaining.

"It's a wonder why we can't get up for other teams and play like this," Seattle guard Brent Barry said. "If we can still bring that focus and energy every game the rest of the way, who knows about the playoffs. It's a slim chance, but still a chance. So we have to go out and compete and show some pride in what we do."

The Blazers trimmed the margin to 61-55 on a basket by Bonzi Wells with 7:24 left. Payton answered with a jumper to trigger a 14-4 burst. Payton capped it with consecutive 3-pointers, with the second one giving Seattle its biggest lead of the game, 75-69, with 2:04 left.

Payton scored 12 points in the third quarter when the Sonics outscored the Blazers, 22-16.

Rod Strickland opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws and Wallace followed with a dunk to pull the Blazers within 75-68 with 8:58 left. But Portland got not closer as Lewis nailed consecutive 3-pointers to give Seattle an 81-68 cushion with 7:31 to go.
