Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Juwan Howard showed why his presence makes the Dallas Mavericks a very different team.

Howard scored 27 points, his best offensive performance since his acquisition, and sparked the Mavericks to a 122-98 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Howard scored six points during a 14-2 third-quarter run that put the game away and Dallas cruised to its fourth straight victory, tying its best streak of the season. He made 8-of-15 shots from the floor, all 11 of his free throws and pulled down nine rebounds.

"I don't get into all those adjectives describing my comfort level here," Howard said. "I'm just happy to be here. My transition as far as coming here has moved quicker than I expected."

Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley each scored 25 points and combined to shoot 6-of-7 from 3-point range for the Mavericks, who shot 50 percent (44-of-88) from the floor and drained 9-of-13 from the arc en route to their highest total of the season.

Steve Nash, usually Dallas' most consistent shooter, made just 2-of-8 shots and did not attempt a 3-pointer, but handed out 11 assists.

"I almost didn't need to shoot tonight," he said. "It's great to be able to come down the floor and get everyone involved and create plays for other players."

Dallas matched its best winning streak of the season and pulled within 1 1/2 games of the Los Angeles Lakers for the fifth spot in the Western Conference playoff race.

"The games we should win, like the team we just played, we have to win," Finley said. "The games against the teams that are above us in the playoff race, we have to at least get half of those. Then we'll be secure."

Johnny Newman scored 18 points and Stephon Marbury added 15 for the Nets, who played the second half without rookie forward Kenyon Martin.

Martin played the first half and did not appear to suffer an injury but did not return after halftime.

"I went up to get a rebound with Juwan and came down (wrong) on the floor," Martin said. "I kept playing but after I settled down at halftime it started throbbing."

The injury spoiled a homecoming for Martin, who grew up in the Dallas area. X-rays were negative and he is day-to-day.

Without him on the floor, the Nets fell apart and Dallas imposed their will below the free-throw line.

"When he went out, it just changes the scheme of things the way we attack people," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "I knew we were going to be in a little bit of bad shape because we already had foul trouble and then we're losing a guy who's been playing extremely well. It really hurt us when he went out."

Without Martin, New Jersey was outscored, 66-46, in the second half and committed 24 turnovers overall.

The Nets trailed for most of the first half and their 45-44 lead in the second quarter was their largest since the game's opening minutes. But Howard followed with a 14-foot jumper to put the Mavs ahead for good and a 3-pointer by Finley gave them a 53-47 lead with 50 seconds left in the first half.

Marbury completed a three-point play and followed that by draining a 3-pointer with five seconds left. That may have given New Jersey some momentum, but Finley retaliated with a 3-pointer from just inside half-court as time expired and Dallas took a four-point lead into the locker room.

Keith Van Horn sank a jumper to open the second-half scoring for New Jersey, but Howard started the decisive run with two free throws at the other end and Dallas never looked back.
