Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz are so much better than the Golden State Warriors they nearly won with their bench alone.

Danny Manning scored 14 points in the fourth quarter as Utah's bench totaled 52 points and helped the Jazz pull away late for a 102-83 victory over the pathetic Warriors.

Manning was held scoreless in the first half and made just one bucket in the third quarter. But after the Warriors rallied within 68-62 with 11:20 left, he took over, along with a host of other reserves.

"We don't have a sense of panic against anyone," Manning said. "We're very poised in all situations."

Manning showed his poise, making 7-of-8 shots from the floor in the final 12 minutes, when the Jazz bench outscored the entire Golden State team, 29-23.

"We caught Golden State in a situation where they were not rotating and we got clean looks," Manning said. "We have a lot of guys who can score and everyone has accepted their role."

Bryon Russell scored 18 points off the bench and Jacque Vaughn added 10 and 11 assists as the Jazz's bench outscored its counterpart by 30 points.

Former Warrior Donyell Marshall had 15 points, 14 rebounds and five assists and Karl Malone collected 16 points and seven rebounds while tying Paul Silas for ninth on the NBA all-time games played list with 1,254.

Marshall struggled with the Warriors but has been a key reason why Utah is competing for the Western Conference title.

"I don't know what it's been like for him on other teams, but he averaged a double-double with the Warriors last year," Malone said. "I don't care if you're playing in a church league -- anytime you do that, you're doing something right."

The Jazz raced to a 15-point lead after one quarter and led by as many as 18 in the second. They held a 49-35 halftime lead, but the Warriors scored 14 of the first 20 points in the third quarter and closed within six with 5:49 left on a 3-pointer by Bob Sura, who scored 11 points.

Utah again built the lead to 12 until Golden State went on a run to end the third quarter and closed within six on the first basket of the final period.

"We had too many turnovers in the third and let them back into in," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "In the fourth, our bench really picked us up. It's usually the guys who are 38 and 39 years old who win the games for us, so it was nice to see the young guys play well."

Marshall responded with his only 3-pointer of the game and Manning scored four straight points as Utah reclaimed a double-digit lead.

Golden State shot just 35 percent (29-of-81) from the field and stayed afloat only by grabbing 21 offensive rebounds -- one more than it had on the defensive glass.

Mookie Blaylock scored 17 points and Adonal Foyle added 15 and 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who have lost eight straight games and seven in a row at home, both season-high streaks.

Golden State's Antawn Jamison, ninth in the NBA in scoring at 24.6 points per game, scored just 10 on 3-of-15 shooting.

"I think it's mental, all mental," he said. "I'm always conscious about making the shot. It's always in my head and dwelling on it only makes it worse."
