Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 22 points as the Seattle SuperSonics used a late 8-0 run to rally for their third straight win, 108-102 over the Milwaukee Bucks.

The streak is Seattle's longest since winning five in a row from January 21-27.

A basket by Glenn Robinson gave Milwaukee its last lead at 73-72 with just over six minutes to play. Payton had half the points during the decisive run, which opened an 80-73 lead with 4:19 remaining.

"I challenged my guys at halftime to step it up defensively," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We gave then too many easy shots in the first half. We shot the ball well from the perimeter tonight."

Rashard Lewis scored 21 points and Emanual Davis added 15 for Seattle, which is desperately trying to gain ground in the playoff chase. Davis had three 3-pointers in the fourth for the SuperSonics, who are 10th in the Western Conference, 4 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the last postseason berth.

"Emanual and Rashard played big minutes for us tonight," McMillan said. "They both hit a lot of open shots."

"Tonight, shots fell for me so I kept putting them up," Davis added. "I get open looks every night because of Gary getting double-teamed. I just need to knock down shots."

Payton is averaging 25.6 points during the winning streak.

Seattle held a 43-38 rebounding advantage, including nine by Vin Baker and eight by Lewis. The Sonics committed only eight turnovers.

Robinson netted 21 points while Tim Thomas and Sam Cassell each added 20 for Milwaukee, which had its lead over second-place Charlotte cut to 1 1/2 games in the Central Division.

"It doesn't matter how many points you score. If you give a team that many second chances, you're going to lose," Robinson said. "They outrebounded us, plain and simple."

The Bucks played without Cassell for nearly the entire fourth quarter. He strained his hip flexor late in the third and Milwaukee committed five turnovers without him in the final period. Cassell also had 11 assists.

"Lindsey (Hunter) wasn't very healthy, so the timing of Sam's injury hurt us," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "My disappointment is that they played harder than us. They dictated the game with their energy the whole second half."

Milwaukee lost despite shooting 54 percent (42-of-78). Ray Allen added 18 points while Thomas made three 3-pointers.

The Bucks lost for just the second time in their last six home games.
