Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks may be the latest team ready to pass the fading Portland Trail Blazers.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 12 of his 14 points in the first quarter, when the Mavericks built a 17-point lead en route to a 103-83 rout of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Mavericks (42-23) extended their winning streak to a season-high five games and tied the Trail Blazers, losers of five straight, for fifth place in the Western Conference.

"I didn't expect a 20-point win," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson. "I didn't expect to keep a lead like that the whole game. I think we owe this to scheduling. They had a really tough game in San Antonio last night. They lose in overtime and they don't really have a lot of energy for tonight's game."

The Timberwolves (38-28) have dropped four of their last five, including a 106-100 overtime defeat at San Antonio on Wednesday, and lead Houston by just one game in the race for the final playoff berth in the West.

The Mavs were in control throughout, racing to a 16-5 lead in the first 3 1/2 minutes. They increased the advantage to 33-16 at the end of the quarter, with Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Michael Finley combining for 27 points.

"They had a tough game yesterday and we knew that," Nowitzki said. "We watched parts of it, so we knew we had to come out early and try to put the game behind us. And that's what we did."

Dallas shot 57 percent (12-of-21) in the first quarter while the Timberwolves missed 19-of-25 shots.

"We didn't really give ourselves a chance. They came out and jumped on us," said Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders. "The last three times we've faced them, we've been down 15 or 18 after the first quarter and we've been playing catchup. We're not a great team as far as playing catchup."

In the first meeting between the teams on January 10 in Minnesota, the Mavs built a 10-point lead after one quarter and rolled to a 106-86 victory.

Kevin Garnett scored 13 of his 28 points in the second quarter, but Minnesota trailed by 15 at halftime and never threatened thereafter.

A short jumper by Juwan Howard gave the Mavericks their biggest lead at 93-70 with 3:58 left in the fourth quarter.

Garnett also led the Timberwolves with 16 rebounds but received little help.

"The last two times we played these guys, we got blasted by 20," he said. "I hope I'm not the only one in here that feels like that. We've got these guys two more times. It's getting to the point where we've got to set some kind of tone."

Felipe Lopez was the only other Minnesota player in double figures with 15 points. The Timberwolves' starting backcourt of Terrell Brandon and Anthony Peeler combined for 13 points on 6-of-17 shooting and reserves LaPhonso Ellis, Sam Mitchell and Chauncey Billups missed 12-of-14 shots.

Minnesota shot 35 percent from the field and was outrebounded, 52-44. Nowitzki had 14 rebounds and Shawn Bradley added 13 for Dallas.

Finley led the Mavericks with 22 points and added 10 boards. Nash scored 18 points and Eisley had 16 off the bench.

"I think it was a little bit of both. We played well and they may have been tired," Nash said. "But you have to take advantage of that. That's the way the league goes."

Nowitzki scored 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the first nine minutes as Dallas raced to a 26-9 lead. A 3-pointer by Nash with 1:55 left increased the advantage to 31-11.

"We came out slow and we never recovered from that," Garnett said.
