Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse matched a career high with 46 points, but Kobe Bryant was the real story.

Bryant scored 24 of his 39 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Los Angeles Lakers rallied for a 125-119 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Los Angeles moved within one-half game of first-place Sacramento in the Pacific Division.

"That was a difficult game for any coach to have to sit out there and watch," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I didn't think we played a smart game down the stretch. We rallied and got it back and Kobe was part of the energy that got us back in the game. We were just getting penetration and he got some offensive things going for him in the process."

Bryant scored on Corliss Williamson with 2.3 seconds left in regulation to knot it at 111-111. Then he made overtime his personal showcase, perhaps making up for lost time after missing the previous two games with a viral infection.

"I was thinking Kobe was looking for something else," Williamson said. "I did not think he would pull up. He was real deep, too, but I should never have let him shoot that and that was just a mental breakdown, regardless of where he was on the floor.

"It was real difficult to guard guys with two sprained ankles," Bryant said. "I had to play. I felt OK, I had to catch my second wind at the beginning of the game. I was a little tired at first. I was just concerned with the win."

Bryant sandwiched two baskets around a bucket by Detroit's Chucky Atkins for a 115-113 lead with 3:10 to go. After Derek Fisher made a 3-pointer with 2:27 left, Stackhouse made a late push to be the hero.

Stackhouse, who hit 13-of-30 shots and 17-of-19 free throws, converted a three-point play with 1:39 to go and gave Detroit a 119-118 lead with a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left.

But Bryant responded with the go-ahead basket 13 seconds later and added two free throws for a 122-119 advantage with 10 seconds left.

Detroit missed a final chance to tie and Robert Horry iced the win with a free throw with 2.7 seconds to play.

"This was tough," Stackhouse said. "It hurts to play this well and not get the `W.' It's been like this all season, it's almost like an omen. It seemed like every time someone needs to make a big shot against us, they make it, or if they don't, they get bailed out with an offensive rebound or a foul or something."

Shaquille O'Neal had 26 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles, which has won 11 straight games at Detroit. O'Neal made 6-of-15 from the stripe, accounting for nine of the Lakers' 13 misses.

Stackhouse matched a Palace of Auburn Hills scoring record for the Pistons, who lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

"We gave a great effort and really had the game," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "Kobe made a great play at the end to tie it. The thing that got them back in the game was when they went to their second team. They had a lot of energy and got a lot of second shots and third shots at the start of the fourth quarter, and that got them back in the game."

Atkins added 20 points while Ben Wallace had his 10th double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

The Pistons had a 50-41 rebounding edge as Joe Smith collected eight boards.
