Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Matt Harpring scored a career-high 28 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers won for just the second time in 11 games with a 114-109 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Cleveland had lost 21 of its last 24 games. Six days ago, it beat Central Division leaders Milwaukee before snapping the Hornets' four-game overall and road winning streaks.

"This team had everything it needed to win," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "Charlotte came in here playing at an extremely high level and we had to have great focus to win. We couldn't get into a walk-it-up style because this team is too big and strong."

"Tonight was a great team effort," Harpring added. "We played together and that's what we really need to do to win. The bottom line is we have to find a way to play like this every night. Until we do that, we're not going to sustain a winning streak. We haven't given up and we're still not out of the playoff race."

The Cavaliers used a 7-1 fourth-quarter surge to snap a tie and take the lead for good. Wesley Person knocked down a 16-foot jumper to make it 91-85 with 8:31 to go.

Charlotte hit back-to-back buckets before David Wesley split foul shots to make it 93-91 with 7:04 to play. But that was as close as the Hornets got as they failed to pull within a game of Milwaukee for the division lead.

Harpring, who had to miss 25 games after getting hurt against Charlotte in January, had eight points in the fourth quarter. He scored to give Cleveland a 101-95 lead with under five minutes to play.

"I play my game and the guys feed off me," Harpring said. "I got hurt against them. I guess I owe them one."

"He really brought it tonight and everyone filled in behind him," Cavs center Robert Traylor said. "We followed in his shoes and he had a great game."

The Cavaliers had six players in double figures and shot 53 percent (43-of-81) from the field. Clarence Weatherspoon had 14 11 rebounds and Bimbo Coles had 14 off the bench for Cleveland, which scored 52 points in the paint.

Wesley scored 26 points and Jamal Mashburn added 23 for the Hornets, who shot 49 percent (38-of-77).

Coles hit a jump shot with 10:24 left to give Cleveland the lead for good at 86-84.

The Hornets, who allow an average of 88 points per game, gave up 100 for just the eighth time this season. They fell to 17-2 when scoring 100 points and being held to one offensive rebound in the second half was a big part of it.

"I'm concerned about how we played," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "The Cavs virtually did everything they wanted to. Offensive rebounds, second chances and we did not block people out. It was just a bad night for us, but these things happen. We just got beat tonight and you have to hand it to them. They gave us an old fashion butt-kicking and that's it."
