Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker scored 21 points as the Boston Celtics continued their dominance at the Pepsi Center with an 87-83 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

The Nuggets dropped their fifth straight game to Boston, which has not lost at Denver since February 10, 1998 and swept the season series after a 104-102 overtime victory in December. Boston held on to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, percentage points ahead of Indiana.

Walker's long 3-pointer gave the Celtics a 72-70 advantage and the lead for good with just under six minutes to play. Boston scored six straight points down the stretch to hold Denver at bay and snap the Nuggets' two-game winning streak.

After Randy Brown hit a jumper to give the Celtics an 80-76 edge, Nick Van Exel's runner got the bounce to pull the Nuggets within two with 1:33 remaining.

But with 1:08 to go, Paul Pierce answered with a jumper for his first points of the second half to start the clinching surge, the rest of which came from the foul line. Milt Palacio and Bryant Stith made two foul shots each and Pierce added one for an 87-80 lead.

Pierce had 14 points and 12 rebounds on 5-of-15 shooting after scoring 42 in the last two games.

"I can't score 40 points every night," Pierce said. "I did other things to help my team win. Stith stepped up and Brown stepped up and we need to keep fighting one game at at time."

James Posey scored a season-high 19 points for Denver, which dropped to 24-11 at home.

Antonio McDyess had 17 points and 19 rebounds. Van Exel also scored 17 with 15 assists for Denver, which scored just 35 points in the middle quarters.

Denver, which is virtually out of the playoff race, has failed to score 90 points for the 20th time this season and is 4-16 in those games.

Stith scored 17 points against his former team. Boston had four starters in double figures and won back-to-back road games for the first time since February 15-17.

"We're in a dogfight for that eighth playoff spot and it's important for us to keep pace with Indiana," Stith said. "I made a conscious effort to relax and get my teammates the ball and let the game come to me."

"I still wish he was with the team but unfortunately not," McDyess said. "And I wish he didn't have that kind of game against us."

Van Exel had a chance to give his team the lead with under a minute to play. He attempted a runner that bounced off the back of the rim which would have pulled the Nuggets within 82-80.

On the next possession, he misfired on a 3-pointer from the right corner that caromed off the the side of the rim with 38 seconds to play. Walker grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball upcourt.

"It was tough," Van Exel said. "I had a lot of looks and missed some crucial shots down the stretch. We didn't bounce back."

Posey nailed a pull-up jumper with 17 seconds to go, but the basket was waved off when the referee said he pushed off. It would have edged Denver within 84-80.
