Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 24 points as the Seattle SuperSonics won their fourth straight game, a 90-80 triumph over the shorthanded Chicago Bulls.

Ruben Patterson scored 16 points off the bench and Patrick Ewing added 14 for the SuperSonics, whose four-game streak is their longest since winning five in a row from January 21-27.

"This was a tough game to come out and play," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "Chicago plays a slow tempo and executes their offense to take the high-percentage shot. We pounded it in to the low post and that was one of the keys."

The Bulls played without a pair of key players, both of whom sat out with injuries. Forwards Elton Brand (left knee tendinitis) and Ron Artest (right knee) both missed the contest.

"I thought our guys tried to compete tonight," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "I was disappointed that we did not shoot more free throws in terms of trying to take it to the rim."

Seattle took command in the second quarter with a 7-0 run for a 39-29 lead with 5:46 to go. Patterson had four points and Brent Barry three during the spurt.

"You come back from playing well against the top teams in the Western Conference and then play the last place team here," McMillan said. "We felt like we had a size advantage and knew that they didn't really go to the double team."

The SuperSonics led 48-39 at halftime and a layup by Jelani McCoy gave Seattle its largest advantage at 55-41 with 8 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. Chicago got no closer than eight points thereafter, the final time at 86-78 on a basket from rookie Marcus Fizer with 56 seconds left.

"I talked about Marcus Fizer to our guys," McMillan said. "They didn't run their triangle offense tonight and that helped him and some of the other guys get good looks."

Fizer scored 25 points to go along with 10 rebounds and Corey Benjamin added 13 for Chicago, which has lost five in a row. Flu-ridden Ron Mercer finished with 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting.

Payton made 9-of-19 shots, shaking off seven turnovers. Patterson made 7-of-10 shots while Ewing connected on 5-of-8 for Seattle, which shot 48 percent (33-of-69).

"It was never a problem," Payton said. "We stayed up 10 almost all the time. We weren't worried about them. We didn't put them away because we were doing things to ourselves."

Despite their limited numbers, the Bulls held a 42-40 rebounding edge. Chicago's bench was outscored by the SuperSonics, 25-20.

Seattle has won its last three visits to Chicago.
