Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Heading into the All-Star break, the San Antonio Spurs had an eight-game winning streak snapped by the New Jersey Nets. Tim Duncan made sure it did not happen again.

Duncan had 29 points and 16 rebounds for his league-leading 53rd double-double as the Spurs extended their winning streak to a season-high nine games with a 95-86 victory over the Nets.

The 7-foot Duncan, who started at forward for the Western Conference in the All-Star Game, scored 12 points in the third quarter, when the Spurs stretched a six-point halftime lead to 77-56. As time expired in the period, Duncan nailed a 25-footer from the right wing for his fifth 3-pointer of the season.

"We came out of the gate real aggressive, but we really didn't execute the way we wanted to," Duncan said. "We came out real strong in the third and played better. We put up some points and we were able to put a foot on them."

Derek Anderson scored 17 points and David Robinson added 14 -- all in the first three quarters -- as San Antonio moved 1 1/2 games in front of the Utah Jazz for the lead in the Midwest Division and top spot in the Western Conference.

"I'm glad to get the win," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "They played well in the second half and stepped up defensively. The team defense was good and they did a good job on Stephon Marbury. They limited him in the second half. That got our energy up."

Samaki Walker recorded 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench for San Antonio, which leads the NBA in home wins with a 27-6 mark at the Alamodome.

Johnny Newman scored 22 points and Marbury had 20 and nine assists for New Jersey, which shot just 38 percent (31-of-81) and fell to 0-4 on a five-game road trip that ends in Denver on Sunday.

"Tim Duncan just dominated the game tonight," Marbury said. "We played hard all they way through. We didn't give up. When we were down by 20 points we just kept playing and competing."

Marbury had 38 points and Newman added 25 in New Jersey's 99-97 home win over the Spurs on February 8. But the Nets have lost five of their last six games in San Antonio.

"Marbury really killed us in the first meeting," Robinson said. "We wanted to try to corral him. He is real good at getting to the rim. We didn't want to allow him any easy opporunities."

Despite shooting just 38.5 percent (15-of-39) in the first half, the Spurs took a 45-39 lead into the locker room

Robinson and Terry Porter each scored four points in a 10-2 burst before Malik Rose's 10-footer pushed San Antonio's lead to 59-45 with 4:59 left in the third quarter.

Rose, who had eight points in 10 minutes off the bench, made a jumper from the left corner to give the Spurs their largest lead, 83-58, with 8:25 remaining.

In what was essentially garbage time, Marbury scored six points during a 16-2 run that pulled the Nets within 87-79 when Evan Eschmeyer had a two-handed dunk with 72 seconds to play.

Popovich was forced to put Duncan back in the game and he hit a pair of free throws to give the Spurs an 89-79 lead with 66 seconds left.
