Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks are making a serious run at the top spot in the Western Conferece.

Dallas exploded in the first quarter and held off a late run by the Phoenix Suns to extend its season-high to winning streak to six games with a 109-99 victory.

The Mavericks (43-23) have tied Portland for fifth place in the Western Conference, just 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Before the trade (for Juwan Howard), we were just not as good as the teams we were competing with," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I thought the trade made us even, or maybe have an edge on a couple of them now."

Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Michael Finley accounted for 82 of Dallas' points. Nowitzki had 34 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks and flourished in the third quarter, when the Mavs opened a 19-point lead on two occasions.

"Nowitzki was just on fire from outside and that was a big part of our offense," Nelson said. "I went with our smaller lineup and they did very well."

Nash scored 28 points and Finley added 20, 11 assists and six rebounds.

"Finley's 11 assists speak for itself," Nelson said. "We are moving the ball. He was drawing double-teams and finding the open guy."

"Those guys are great shooters," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Nash, Finley and Nowitzki are gym rat-type guys. They love to play, they love to practice, they work on their games, and that's the key to them winning right now."

The Mavericks never trailed and used a 23-10 run in the first quarter to open a double-digit lead they maintained until the fourth quarter.

Dallas led, 12-10, when Nowitzki scored four straight points to spark a 17-4 run that gave the Mavs a 29-14 lead after one period. Finley contributed seven points during the run and Nash hit a pair of 3-pointers, including one from the left sideline as time expired.

"They made some tough shots," Phoenix's Jason Kidd said. "We tried to make Steve score and Steve did. Steve made some tough shots, but then again, we had some breakdowns."

The Mavs maintained their double-digit lead and entered the third quarter with an 84-66 advantage.

Clifford Robinson opened the final quarter with a 3-pointer and the Suns scored the first seven points to close within 11 with 10:16 remaining.

Dallas once again built an 18-point lead but Phoenix made one last attempt with a 23-11 run that brought it within 104-98 with just under two minutes left.

"We were coming back, but they always made a shot when they had to make one," Kidd said.

In the final two minutes, Phoenix missed its only shot and committed two turnovers while the Mavs made 5-of-6 free throws to seal the win.

Kidd scored 15 points in the final period as Phoenix made its run but committed one of the turnovers and missed a 3-pointer on the Suns' final possession.

"He kept us in it," Skiles said. "I thought he played with a lot of heart and did everything he could do personally to have a steal win out there."

Kidd collected 32 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Cliff Robinson added 26, nine and four blocks and Shawn Marion added 13 points and 15 rebounds for Phoenix, which has dropped two in a row and is one-half game ahead of Minnesota for the seventh spot in the West.
