Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 34 points and Donyell Marshall added 22 as the Utah Jazz defeated the Los Angeles Clippers for the ninth straight time, 111-96.

Malone made 13-of-18 shots from the floor and 8-for-8 free throws as Utah completed a 2-2 road trip and moved within one-half game of the San Antonio Spurs for the Midwest Division lead.

"When we play the game like we're supposed to, it's pretty easy," Malone said. "Making the extra pass, the simple pass, it's not about between your legs or behind your back. Just get it in the bucket. We've been around each other for a long time."

Marshall hit 9-of-12 shots as the Jazz shot 58 percent (44-of-76) and improved to 22-11 on the road. John Stockton added 13 points and 10 assists for Utah. Stockton did not commit a turnover and the Jazz had just eight while totaling 28 assists.

"We had a tough game the other night, so we had everyone's concentration," said Stockton referring to Friday's 90-87 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. "We played pretty good team defense."

Utah had eight steals and scored 18 points off 14 turnovers by the Clippers. Reserves Jacque Vaughn and Danny Manning each contributed eight points as 11 of 12 players scored for the Jazz.

Corey Maggette scored 20 points and rookie Darius Miles added 14 and 10 rebounds off the bench for Los Angeles, which shot 53 percent (32-of-60). Jeff McInnis had 14 points and nine assists for the Clippers.

"We got a whole team together right now. We will have great chemistry next year if everyone is here," McInnis said.

Jerry Sloan coached his 1,000th game with the Jazz, picking up his 682nd win. Utah never has finished lower than third in the Midwest in Sloan's 12 seasons. He was named the IBM Coach of the Month for February after the Jazz went 10-2.

"He's just been a terrific coach," Stockton said. "I've been the fortunate one, Karl too, to know him the whole time. It's a great milestone for him and it couldn't happen to a better guy."

"I didn't think I'd make it through the first road trip," said Sloan, whose first season with Utah was 1988-89. "We had to play down here and then had a rough road trip to the East. I thought when I get back home it would be tough to keep a job. I guess I got lucky. Two reasons: John and Karl have gotten along pretty well. They've accepted the team concept."

Malone scored 12 points in the first quarter when the Jazz built a 28-24 lead that they never relinquished.

Los Angeles closed within 35-32 on a 10-footer by Miles with 8:22 left in the second quarter. Vaughn answered with a 15-footer and Eric Piatkowski hit a short jumper at the other end to cut Utah's lead to 37-34 with 7:37 left. But the Clippers got no closer as Manning hit a 20-footer 15 seconds later.

Utah took a 59-45 lead into the break. The Clippers did not cut the deficit under 12 points in the second half. Marshall sank two free throws to cap a 9-2 burst and give the Jazz their largest lead, 101-78, with 6:22 to play.
