Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Derek Anderson scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs built a huge early lead and coasted to a 98-85 victory over the slumping Portland Trail Blazers.

Tim Duncan had 20 points and matched a career high with 23 rebounds for San Antonio, which moved one game ahead of second-place Utah in the Midwest Division. David Robinson chipped in 15 points and seven boards as the Spurs' frontcourt outscored the Trail Blazers' trio, 64-38.

"I was pleased with the performance tonight," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "When you have three players (almost) with double-doubles, you have a good shot at a win. They defended well and executed well."

Duncan and Anderson had five points apiece in a 19-2 first-quarter run that gave the Spurs a 29-12 lead with 2:17 to go. San Antonio led, 29-18, after one and 54-42 at halftime.

Anderson scored five straight points for a 63-47 lead with 8:35 to go in the third quarter. Two free throws by Robinson gave San Antonio a 78-65 lead heading into the fourth.

"We are playing very confidently right now," Duncan said. "We know what to do and we are doing it."

The lead never dipped below double digits the rest of the way as Portland got within 91-81 with just over three minutes left on a 3-pointer by Steve Smith. But San Antonio scored the next five points, capped by Duncan's free throw, for a 96-81 advantage with 1:21 to play.

"This was a great win for us," Duncan said. "We played hard from beginning to the end. We kept our focus real well."

Terry Porter added 11 points and a season-high 10 assists for the Spurs, who made 27-of-35 free throws and committed just 10 turnovers. Anderson made 8-of-14 shots, including three 3-pointers.

"Tonight I had to utilize a variety of shots," Anderson said. "I mixed it up, sometimes pulling up for a jumper or taking it to the hole or passing if I had to."

Smith scored 23 points off the bench for Portland, which fell for the sixth time in seven games. Rasheed Wallace added 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting while Bonzi Wells had 10.

"We're losing games right now," Trail Blazers guard Damon Stoudamire said. "We have to fight for our lives and keep our position. Things are snowballing right now. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that we would be in the position that we are right now."

The Trail Blazers suffered a blow when starting center Arvydas Sabonis suffered a sprained left ankle with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter. He did not return and scored four points in seven minutes.

"Two things cost us the game tonight," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "One was the fact that we didn't finish out when we had good shots, and that allowed them to get to the boards. And then the second-chance points hurt us."

Portland shot just 40.5 percent (30-of-74) and committed 27 personal fouls that led to 35 free throws for the Spurs.
