Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets may have uncovered a new formula that may help them win some games.

Without having to rely on star point guard Stephon Marbury, who sat out with a strained right hip, the Nets used a total team effort in a 104-90 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

New Jersey used just seven players and received solid performances from all, especially rookie Kenyon Martin and Keith Van Horn.

Martin and Van Horn each had 24 points and 11 rebounds and combined to make 23-of-35 shots from the floor. The duo was unstoppable in the paint, where the Nets outscored Vancouver, 54-20.

"There were not a lot of adjustments," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "Our goal was just to get the ball in the post. We wanted to attack the paint and that's what we did."

Without its leading scorer and passer in Marbury, New Jersey's offense shot 53 percent (43-of-81) and made 16-of-18 free throws.

"Under the circumstances we were under, I thought that was an unbelievable effort by our guys," Scott said.

Of course, it didn't hurt that the Nets went up against Vancouver, which is one of just four teams in the NBA that allows opponents to shoot better than 46 percent.

"We just went out there knowing we had that lineup that we had," Van Horn said. "We did a great job tonight executing, pushing the ball getting out on the break and we did a good job on the boards. I think all around it was one of our best efforts of the year."

Johnny Newman added 16 points and Sherman Douglas effectively replaced Marbury with 13 points and 10 assists, although he committed six of New Jersey's 21 turnovers.

Evan Eschmeyer chipped in seven points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Nets, who won the battle on the boards, 50-30.

New Jersey also played without guard Lucious Harris, who was not with the team because of personal reasons.

New Jersey never trailed and seized control for good in the second quarter. The Nets opened a 35-20 lead with a 10-0 run led by rookie Stephen Jackson, who scored four of his 12 points during that spurt. Aaron Williams also scored four points during that run and finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Vancouver climbed back within six with 2:33 left in the first half, but Jackson scored four more points as New Jersey closed the half with six straight.

Vancouver never threatened thereafter and fell to 0-5 on its eight-game road trip.

The Grizzlies' offense sputtered even more than usual, shooting just 35 percent (29-of-82) and 22 percent (4-of-18) from the arc.

"We did not make shots, they made open shots," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "They played hard, they stepped up and they took it to us and we were not ready. I guess we were thinking (because of injuries) they were going to lay down for us and they did not do that. We just did not compete."

Vancouver's Mike Bibby scored 23 points, Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 19 and Michael Dickerson had 17, but none were efficient. They typified the poor offensive effort by combining to shoot just 20-of-53 from the floor and 3-of-11 from the arc.

Erick Strickland added 11 points off the bench for Vancouver, which has lost six in a row overall.
