Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Someone had to win.

Andre Miller handed out 16 assists to go with 15 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers handed the Vancouver Grizzlies their seventh straight loss, 109-95, in a matchup of struggling teams.

Miller was nearly flawless directing the Cavaliers' offense, especially in the first half when he had 10 assists as Cleveland shot 59 percent (26-of-44) and built a 62-48 advantage. The 16 assists were one shy of a career high, set earlier this season.

Wesley Person and Lamond Murray each had 19 points for the Cavaliers, who won for just the fifth time in their last 28 games and improved to 9-1 all-time against the Grizzlies.

"I like our spirit that we had tonight coming off the New York game," said Cavs coach Randy Wittman, whose club suffered a 35-point loss to the Knicks on Tuesday. "When we play like that, we are a team that is very competitive."

Mike Bibby and Michael Dickerson had 19 points apiece for Vancouver, which has lost seven in a row for the fourth time this season.

Despite a matchup of teams already looking to next season, things got feisty early in the fourth quarter when Bibby and Bimbo Coles became involved in an altercation under the Grizzlies basket. Both were ejected.

"He fouled me first, then he threw me to the ground, so I got up and wondered what in the (heck) he was doing," Bibby said. "Then he started coming toward me and we started coming at each other, so I just grabbed him. So there was nothing happening. It's the first time I've been ejected and I didn't think it was worth an ejection. I was holding him so nothing would happen and no fight would break out."

"I tried to be aggressive and maybe I was too aggressive," Coles said. "Bibby doesn't like contact and I was kind of riding him. As he drove to the basket, his arm came around and hit me. I just pushed him down and he came after me. It's not my first ejection and it won't be my last. It's just the way I play."

Playing the sixth game of a season-high eight-game road trip, the Grizzlies were sluggish from the start, never leading and shooting just 33 percent (7-for-21) from the field in the first quarter as they fell behind, 31-19.

A 3-pointer by Person, who made 7-of-12 shots from the field, extended the Cavs' lead to 53-36 with 3:40 left before halftime. Vancouver fought back within 11 but the Cavs closed the half with a 6-1 run.

Vancouver attempted to get back in it in the third quarter, closing to 71-64 on a pair of foul shots by Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who finished with 18 points. But that was as close as they got.

Rookie Chris Mihm drained a 19-footer and Murray a jumper, triggering a 14-8 spurt that closed the quarter and gave the Cavs an 85-72 cushion.

Chris Gatling added 16 points and Clarence Weatherspoon 13 and 13 rebounds for Cleveland, which shot 51 percent (42-of-82) and held a 42-34 rebounding advantage.

"We didn't defend well. We'd get a stop and go down and score and then we'd let them come down and score two times," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said.

Rookie Stromile Swift chipped in 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who trailed by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter. Vancouver shot 45 percent (31-of-69).
