Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Chris Webber was too much for Jerry Stackhouse.

Webber scored 29 points, including the go-ahead three-point play late in the third quarter, and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Sacramento Kings past Stackhouse and the Detroit Pistons, 103-98.

Stackhouse, the league's second-leading scorer, had 31 points on 9-of-29 shooting. He kept the Pistons in it by knocking down six 3-pointers after they trailed by 11 points midway through the third quarter.

A 3-pointer by Stackhouse tied it at 77-77 with 2:19 to go in the period and his dunk capped a 15-4 run and gave Detroit its first lead of the night with 1:43 to go.

After Webber knotted the score, Corliss Williamson put in a follow shot against his former team after the Pistons grabbed three offensive rebounds. But Webber hit a jumper, drew a foul on Ben Wallace and made the free throw to put the Kings ahead for good, 82-81, with 40 seconds left in the third.

With 2:37 to play, Williamson's bucket brought Detroit within 95-92. But the Pistons got no closer.

On the next possession, Detroit had a chance to stop the Kings and get the ball back for a potential tying score. But the horn sounded in the middle of a drive by Webber with 12 seconds on the shot clock, marking the fifth malfunction of the game.

"It's almost like a bad call," Stackhouse said. "It seemed like every time it happened, it went against us. It happened on their end of the floor and gave them a chance to reset after being down in the shot clock. I guess that's home-court advantage."

Webber knocked down a mid-range jumper as Sacramento used an 8-4 burst to open a 103-96 lead with 39.3 seconds remaining.

"We went at it with what we had and pushed them to the end," Stackhouse said after shooting 6-of-12 from behind the arc. "I don't know if it was so much of what we didn't do or so much of what they did. When they had to have a big play or a big basket, they threw it to No. 4 (Webber) and he came through and delivered for them. That summed up the game."

The Kings have won seven in a row at home to remain two games behind San Antonio for the Western Conference lead. They also have taken the last five meetings with the Pistons.

Webber and Peja Stojakovic combined for 54 points. Stojakovic had 25 and Jon Barry chipped in 10 for the Kings, who shot 48 percent (41-of-84).

Sacramento committed 21 turnovers but scored 30 points off Detroit's 16 miscues. The Kings were outrebounded, 51-47, including a 22-7 disadvantage on the offensive glass.

"It was kind of like pass control," Sacramento guard Bobby Jackson said. "They played tough and outrebounded us. That's what kept them in the game."

Trailing by 16, Detroit received 14 second-quarter points from Chucky Atkins, including a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left that got it within 61-56 at halftime.

"We've lost 20 or so games the same way," Atkins said. "We get right there in the fourth quarter, then we lose it."

Detroit shot 47 percent (21-of-45) in the first half but managed just 16 baskets in the second and finished at 38 percent (37-of-97).

"We went back and forth all night, but we have proved that we can play with anybody," Stackhouse said.
