Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- If the Houston Rockets do not make the playoffs, they can blame their performances against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Lamar Odom recorded his second triple-double of the season, leading the Clippers to their third win in four meetings with the Rockets this season, 97-92.

"It was a good game, a great win," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "The great thing about this game is that they had everything to play for, it wasn't like we were coming and playing a team that had nothing to play for."

Odom finished with 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his ffith career triple-double as Los Angeles improved to 2-0 since he returned from a five-game suspension for violating the NBA's substance abuse program.

Jeff McInnis led Los Angeles with 23 points and Michael Olowokandi added 20 and eight rebounds.

"We're coming together at the right time," McInnis said. "Our early losses are helping us out now. Everybody is stepping up and helping out."

McInnis made a 3-pointer to trigger a 9-1 run that opened a 58-50 lead with 7:08 left in the third quarter. He sank two free throws to make it 70-61 heading into the final period.

A basket by Olowokandi gave the Clippers an 84-72 lead with just over five minutes to play before the Rockets rallied. A pair of free throws by Steve Francis capped a 10-2 spurt that pulled Houston within 86-82 with 67 seconds left.

But rookie Darius Miles responded with two free throws and Eric Piatkowski had a steal and dunk for a 90-82 lead in the final minute. The Clippers made seven free throws, including four by Piatkowski, the rest of the way.

"I think the comforting thing for me right now is to see the progress that Michael is making," Gentry said. "I think that he is making unbelieveable progress. The last couple of games, I thought he's been just great."

Francis had 30 points and Cuttino Mobley 21 for Houston, which has lost three in a row on the road. The Rockets started out slowly, missing their first eight shots and falling behind, 11-2, just 5:36 into the game.

"They did a good job on us defensively," Houston coach Rudy Tomjonovich said. "They have good athletes that were able to slide over on our shooters and put hands in their faces."

The Rockets made 12-of-31 shots from beyond the arc, including six by Mobley and four by Francis. Houston never led but was able to tie it at 49-49 with 9:21 to go in the third quarter on two free throws by Kelvin Cato.

"They played us great tonight," Francis said. "They definitely are a young and athletic team. They beat us three times this season. It seems like every time we play them, our shots don't fall."

Houston is 0-2 on a three-game road trip, which concludes Saturday at Seattle. The Rockets trail Minnesota by 2 1/2 games for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

Los Angeles also was aided by a pair of buzzer-beating 3-pointers. Odom connected at the end of the first quarter for a 28-22 lead and rookie Keyon Dooling nailed a long runner for a 46-40 halftime advantage.
