Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Coach Larry Brown's return was nowhere near enough to help the Philadelphia 76ers overcome the absence of Allen Iverson.

Brown was back on the bench after a three-game absence and watched his punchless 76ers drop their fourth straight game without Iverson, an 84-71 setback to the Phoenix Suns.

In all, Philadelphia has lost five in a row, its longest skid since March 20-27, 1998, Brown's first season with the club.

Brown had missed the last three games while undergoing tests that showed he had a hiatal hernia and acid reflux. Assistant Randy Ayers coached the 76ers in losses at Milwaukee, Seattle and Los Angeles before Brown rejoined the team Wednesday.

What he saw in this one may bring on more stomach problems as the Sixers matched a season low for points. They had 27 baskets and 20 turnovers as they searched for offense that never appeared.

Most of the attack has disappeared with Iverson, the NBA's scoring leader at 31.1 points per game who missed the entire road trip with a painful hip pointer. The All-Star guard's quickness and ability to draw double-teams opens the floor for teammates who have been shut down without him.

"He commands so much attention," said Sixers guard Aaron McKie, who scored 20 points. "He makes the game so much easier for a lot of other guys. He creates on the floor and sometimes you have two or three guys chasing him."

Philadelphia shot 37.5 percent (27-of-72), negating its 47-35 rebounding advantage. Without Iverson, the Sixers averaged 78.8 points on the 0-4 trip and surrendered the best record in the NBA.

"It was like the gang that couldn't shoot straight," Brown said. "We did a great job on the boards, but in the second half, I think we were 10-of-38. That's pretty incredible."

Reserve guard Jumaine Jones scored 11 points, most of them in garbage time. No other Sixer was in double figures.

"We just have to do it with what we've got right now," McKie said. "I'm not concerned, we've got some tough guys around here. Sometimes you hit stretches like this, but you have to have confidence in yourself as a team."

The Sixers may have been the perfect antidote for the Suns, who won their third straight game. They were coming off Thursday's win in Seattle and arrived home in the wee hours of Friday morning.

"I know I didn't turn my lights out until 4:30 (a.m.) and I know some of the guys," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "To play with that kind of effort is encouraging."

Jason Kidd notched his 38th career triple-double and seventh this season with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists. Cliff Robinson scored 22 points for the Suns, who avoided their first season sweep at the hands of the Sixers since the 1985-86 season.

"We were supposed to be tired, but we kept pushing the ball at them, being aggressive and that was a big part of our success tonight," Kidd said.

"That's still a tough team, with or without Iverson," Robinson said. "That team plays extremely hard and we knew we were going to have to match their intensity."

Philadelphia trailed 45-43 at halftime but Eric Snow's jumper provided a 49-47 lead with 9:04 left in the third quarter. Phoenix responded with a 15-4 surge to take the lead for good as Robinson drilled two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws to open a 62-53 lead with 4:15 to go.

McKie made a jumper with 3:14 remaining but the Sixers made just one basket over the next 13:45. Two straight baskets by Tony Delk gave Phoenix a 75-61 lead with 6:41 to play and the Suns led by as many as 18 points.

Shawn Marion and Jake Tsakalidis scored 12 points each and Delk added 11 for the Suns, who shot 46 percent (36-of-79).

The Sixers dropped to just 7-7 since acquiring All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo in a trade with Atlanta.
