Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace and Steve Smith scored 19 points apiece as the Portland Trail Blazers tightened the Pacific Division race with a 104-96 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Portland moved within one game of first-place Sacramento and one-half game of the Los Angeles Lakers in the closely bunched Pacific Division.

"I thought it was a good win for us," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "These last games down the stretch are so important. We are all jockeying for position. We physically defended well and we really moved the ball well with good shot selection."

The Trail Blazers started strongly and opened a 17-4 lead just over six minutes into the game on a basket by Arvydas Sabonis. They sputtered offensively for the rest of the period and took a 21-15 lead into the second quarter as Los Angeles closed the period with a resounding alley-oop dunk by rookie Darius Miles.

Portland maintained the advantage and took its largest lead at 88-70 on a basket by Smith with 7:48 left. The Clippers scored six straight points, capped by a basket from Lamar Odom that cut the deficit to 88-76 with just over six minutes remaining.

Los Angeles got as close as 102-95 with 45 seconds left but ran out of time.

Bonzi Wells scored 15 points and Sabonis matched a season high with 11 rebounds for Portland, which opened a four-game homestand. The Trail Blazers have won three in a row after losing six of seven.

"We are playing hard right now," Wells said. "Everyone did their job and did it well. Guys are understanding what they have to do to win -- making sacrifices and playing well."

Shawn Kemp scored 14 points off the bench and Stacey Augmon had 11 in a rare start. Augmon started in place of Scottie Pippen, who had a touch of the flu and scored seven points off the bench.

"Our bench also was good," Dunleavy said. "Shawn, Steve and Scottie all made contributions. And Stacey came in ready and got us off to a good start."

Damon Stoudamire was held scoreless, missing all six shots, but dished out 10 assists. Wallace converted all three 3-point attempts as the Trail Blazers made 5-of-8.

"Tonight was a big challenge for us coming in here," Pippen said. "We knew this game was going to be challenging but we took them out early. We have been able to move the ball and play well together lately. There was definitely growth tonight."

Smith made all 11 of his foul shots as Portland shot 75 percent (27-of-36) from the line.

Corey Maggette scored 19 points and Odom had 14 and eight rebounds for Los Angeles, which suffered its sixth straight road loss. The Clippers shot 46 percent (35-of-76) and made 22-of-27 (82 percent) free throws.

"I thought we played well," coach Alvin Gentry said. "They are just a really talented team. You have to give them credit. I still think they are a great team and are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the West."

Jeff McInnis scored 14 points while rookie Quentin Richardson had 13 and Miles added 10. The Clippers' reserves narrowly outscored Portland's vaunted bench, 56-50.

"We all have to play well to beat them," McInnis said. "Tonight, I had a terrible game the whole game. We never had everyone clicking on the same page at the same time."

Los Angeles fell for the first time in three games since Odom returned from a five-game suspension for violating the NBA's substance-abuse policy.
