Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Considering their success against the powerful Western Conference, the New York Knicks probably did not expect that much of a struggle against the lowly Golden State Warriors.

Glen Rice hit a 3-pointer to close regulation and the Knicks went on to an 89-87 overtime victory over the Warriors in the opener of a key five-game western road trip.

New York trailed, 85-82, when Allan Houston nearly lost control of his dribble at the right wing. But he managed to get a pass off to Rice, who sank a 3-pointer from the right baseline over the outstretched arms of Antawn Jamison.

"I was feeling pretty good, feeling strong," Rice said. "I had some decent shots. I just wanted to make something happen for the team. We were doing really well, and when I came into the game I wanted to continue giving us that lift. For the most part it worked out pretty good."

Rice scored 18 points, making 7-of-11 shots in 23 minutes off the bench. Latrell Sprewell had 17 points and seven rebounds and Houston added 16 points for New York, which improved to 15-9 against the West -- the best record of any Eastern Conference club. The Knicks made 21 turnovers, leading to 25 points for the Warriors.

"We didn't execute well. To have three straight turnovers with under two minutes was something that we can't have," Sprewell said. "We're a veteran team, so we have to do a better job of taking care of the ball."

Jamison scored 41 points and Chris Porter added a career-high 24 for the Warriors. Mookie Blaylock dished out a season-high 16 assists, but made just 3-of-20 shots. Blaylock had a chance to win the game, but his 3-pointer from the right baseline bounced off the iron as time expired.

"I wasn't drained at all," said Jamison, who played all 50 minutes and made 15-of-32 shots. "I still had 89 more rounds in me. It was just one of those things. Both teams played excellent defense. A lot of these guys really stepped it up on the defensive end and it was a defensive battle."

The Warriors shot just 37 percent (34-of-93), and lost for the 12th time in 13 games.

"We saw a great ballgame tonight," Golden State coach Dave Cowens said. "I don't know how devastating it was. We're looking for performance and we're looking for guys who continually play hard. I just really liked our effort."

Marcus Camby had 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Knicks, who shot 43.5 percent (37-of-85) and moved into a tie with the Miami Heat for third place in the East.

After New York missed its first three shots in overtime, Camby made a reverse layup for an 87-85 lead with 3:17 to play. Golden State missed three shots before Jamison hit an 18-footer to tie the score, 87-87, with 1:45 remaining. But Houston answered with a 21-footer for the winning basket.

Rice scored 11 points in the first half when the Knicks built a 47-38 lead.

Jamison scored six points on a 9-2 burst that he capped with a jumper to tie the score, 78-78, with 3:50 left in the fourth. Camby responded with a dunk to give the Knicks the lead with 2:51 remaining. Jamison made 1-of-2 free throws with 2:33 to go and after Houston missed a jumper, the Warriors got their first lead of the second half on Jamison's turnaround jumper with 1:25 left.

A steal by Porter led to Blaylock's 21-footer that gave Golden State an 83-80 advantage with 42.5 seconds remaining. Sprewell made a pair of free throws to pull the Knicks within 83-82 with 32.6 seconds left. The Warriors regained a three-point lead when Jamison made a running jumper with 9.7 seconds to play.
