Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics kept alive their faint playoff hopes by continuing their dominance over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Seattle stayed five games behind Phoenix for the final Western Conference postseason spot with its 12th straight victory over the Cavaliers, 104-86.

The Sonics, who have won eight of their last nine games, shot 57 percent (39-of-69) from the floor and drilled 7-of-10 3-pointers.

"It's going to be tough," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We have nine games left and everybody is starting to play better basketball because in another two weeks the real basketball starts."

Gary Payton had 21 points and eight assists and Ruben Patterson scored 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting for Seattle, which improved to 3-1 on a six-game homestand.

Vin Baker added seven points, seven rebounds and had seven of Seattle's 13 blocks.

"I was anticipating things because things weren't flowing for me offensively," said Baker, who made 3-of-6 shots. "I was either going to get dunked on or going to get a lot of blocks and tonight it was blocked shots."

"Vin Baker was big in the paint with his defensive presence," McMillan said. "Coming over and contesting shots, he really stepped up."

The Sonics led throughout but were not able to pull away until a 16-6 run in the third quarter gave them a 14-point cushion. The Cavs never got the deficit under double digits thereafter.

"After the second quarter, we went with our second unit and went seven minutes with four points," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "Seattle was able to come out and get some easy baskets and that put us in a hole."

Patrick Ewing returned to the Seattle lineup after missing one game with back spasms and scored five of his 12 points during the key third-quarter run.

"I felt a little rusty because I was out for a few days, but other than that I played OK," Ewing said.

The hapless Cavaliers shot just 42 percent (35-of-83) and have lost five of their last eight games.

Wesley Person scored 15 points and Andre Miller had 14 and 10 assists for Cleveland, which has not won here since March 5, 1991.

The Cavaliers led, 27-20, after the first quarter but surrendered 36 points in the second and Seattle held a 56-48 halftime advantage.

"The second quarter killed us," Miller said. "Our defense wasn't going to well. They made big plays and got a lot of easy baskets."
