Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Lamar Odom displayed what is making him the NBA's next superstar.

Odom recorded his second triple-double in four games as the Los Angeles Clippers snapped a six-year drought with a 101-94 victory over the struggling Detroit Pistons.

"We knew what we had to do," Odom said. "I just tried to do my job but I'm hyped about the win."

Odom tallied 27 points, 11 assists and a career-high 16 rebounds as the Clippers ended a four-game home drought against Detroit that dated to March 15, 1995. They swept the season series for the first time since the 1990-91 season.

On Thursday, Odom collected his fifth career triple-double with 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds against the Houston Rockets.

The 6-10 Odom sent an early message with nine points and five assists in the opening quarter, helping Los Angeles to a 31-25 lead. He took 12 points, seven rebounds and seven boards in the break.

"I just wanted to get my teammates involved," Odom added. "And I was hitting my shots too. Triple-doubles are always good as long as you can also win the game. I felt I could get to wherever I wanted to get to on the floor and I just played in the flow of the game. They didn't double-team me as much as I thought they would."

Odom gained his 12th point 1:46 into the second quarter and sat down at 8:23 of the period with the Clippers leading 40-32 and didn't return until the second half.

"I thought he was sensational," said Clippers coach Alvin Gentry. "I probably kept him out more than he's ever sat out in the first half. Obviously he was going to play a lot of minutes in the second half anyway. But I thought he was great."

Jeff McInnis scored 15 points and rookie Darius Miles added 13 off the bench for the Clippers which shot 46 percent (37-of-80). The team has 10 games remaining and needs to win just four for its first 30-win season 1997-98.

Los Angeles led by as many as 12 points when Quentin Richardson converted a pair from the line to make it 57-45 with 1:33 to play in the second quarter.

Detroit, which shot 42 percent (35-of-83), cut the deficit to 66-65 when Jerry Stackhouse knocked down a 15-footer with 4:56 to play in the third quarter. Less than three minutes later, Chucky Atkins hit a running jumper to give the Pistons a 72-71 lead.

But the Clippers traded baskets before they used an 8-0 run to start the final quarter and push the lead to 82-73. They never trailed again.

Stackhouse, who made just 8-of-21 shots, received two technicals with 8:28 remaining and was ejected. He scored 21 points to lead five Pistons in double figures.

"Jerry really wants Detroit to be a great franchise, he really wants to win," Mikki Moore said. "That's all it is. It's frustration. It's just that he wants it so bad that his emotions take over, that's all."

Four of Detroit's starters scored in double-digits. Joe Smith had 17, Moore added 16 and a career-high 12 rebounds, but the Pistons gave up 24 points on 15 turnovers. Detroit had just 17 total assists and dropped its fifth straight game to go winless on a four-game road trip.

"We still had opportunities when he went out," Smith said. "We just didn't take advangatage of the. We had some guys knock down good shots, but it was at the defensive end where we had all of our problems."
