Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose had 35 points and 12 assists and Reggie Miller scored 27 points as the Indiana Pacers posted an easy 112-102 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Rose made 14-of-20 shots and Miller 11-of-19 as Indiana halted a seven-game road losing streak and moved one-half game ahead of Boston for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"I feel good about the victory," Rose said. "Anytime you're in a playoff hunt like we are, these are tough games to come in and play because they're playing with their backs against the wall."

"We both got into the game pretty quick, got some early looks, and that always helps," Miller said. "But whenever both of us are on like that, we're pretty much in the ballgame or have control of the ballgame."

Al Harrington contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Pacers, who held a 42-36 advantage on the boards and won the first game on a four-game road trip.

After trailing by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, Washington cut the deficit to 68-61 on Christian Laettner's dunk with 6:20 to play.

But Rose scored seven of his 14 fourth-quarter points in a row to push the score to 75-61 with 4:15 left.

The Wizards crept within 101-98 with 2:30 to go when rookie Courtney Alexander hit a jumper off the glass. Miller turned the ball over and the Wizards had a chance to pull within one or tie, but Richard Hamilton could not handle Alexander's pass and Harrington had a follow dunk to give the Pacers a five-point cushion with under two minutes to play.

"I thought in the fourth quarter our guys played with a tremendous effort," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "Obviously we got off to a poor start, but we responded well during the rest of the game."

Indiana shot 54 percent (45-of-82), including 50 percent (7-of-14) from the arc. Rose drained 7-of-8 free throws and Miller 4-of-7 from the circle. The starters combined for 40-of-69 from the floor.

"We did a good job of moving the basketball around," Miller said. "We got off to a good start, and that was key. I understand they've had some injuries and some other internal problems, but they play hard. They've got a lot of pride."

Rose had four free throws and a dunk in the final minute to cap Indiana's scoring and hand Washington its 12th loss in the last 13 meetings between the teams.

"My stat line was terrible," joked Rose, who had three rebounds. "They've got so many big guys down in there battling for rebounds, and Sam Perkins gets a season-high rebounds and Harrington gets 13 rebounds ... There just weren't too many long rebounds for a skinny guy like me to pick up."

Hamilton scored 31 points and Alexander added 23 for the Wizards, who shot 50 percent (40-of-79) but dropped their third straight game.

"We knew we had to step up," Hamilton said. "But our guys didn't step down."

The Wizards trailed 58-47 at the break after shootin 59 percent for the half. But could not muster the energy to overcome Rose and Miller.

"They definitely got our attention," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said. "But thanks to Sam, Reggie and Jalen, we calmed things down, made a few shots and went back on a roll again.

Perkins added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting while hitting 3-of-6 from long range.

"At end-of-game situations, our guys know enough now to give the ball to Reggie and Jalen as opposed to trying to shoot it themselves." Thomas added.
