Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs clinched the first playoff berth in the Western Conference and became the first team to reach 50 wins with a 92-79 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

The Spurs (50-21) dominated from start to finish and remained atop the West, moving 2 1/2 games ahead of Utah, which was defeated by Houston. They also moved one-half game ahead of Philadelphia for the best record in the NBA.

"We don't worry about the rest of the NBA, we worry about only us," Spurs guard Derek Anderson said. "If we are playing good basketball the record will speak for itself. What we need to do now is finish it out and get ready for the playoffs."

San Antonio made eight of its first nine shots and jumped out to a 16-7 lead behind eight early points from Tim Duncan and six from Anderson. The Spurs shot 59 percent (13-of-22) in the opening period and never looked back, taking a 30-21 lead.

San Antonio did not pull away until it began the second half on a 16-6 run to open its largest lead at 64-43 with 6:43 to go in the third quarter.

Duncan sparked the run with a pair of free throws and David Robinson scored five of his 10 points during the spurt -- all from the line.

The Hornets closed within 68-53 by the end of the quarter and sliced the deficit to 10 points on four different occasions in the fourth period. But Charlotte missed two golden opportuntities to cut the deficit to single digits in the final five minutes and closed a winless three-game road trip.

"They made it interesting in the fourth, more interesting than we would have liked," Robinson said. "They made us work for everything we got."

After Jamal Mashburn made a pair of free throws to bring the Hornets within 82-72 at the 5:03 mark, he had a chance to bring them even closer. But an easy seven-foot jumper rimmed out and San Antonio regained control and extended the lead at the other end.

Minutes later, Charlotte again trailed by 10 points but wasted a fast break opportunity when David Wesley made an errant pass that sailed out of bounds with three minutes left. Samaki Walker increased the lead from the line and the Spurs scored the next five points to seal the victory.

"We played well the entire game but we can play better and we're going to need to down the stretch and in the playoffs," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "When you hold a team to 79 points, you've done a good job."

Duncan was in foul trouble in most of the second half but still posted his league-leading 59th double-double with 34 points and 19 rebounds. He made 11-of-19 shots and 12-of-12 from the line.

"He is in top form right now," Robinson said. "They had no answer for him."

"I knew he was going to score," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "Either you double him and leave all the other guys open or you try to shut everyone else down. I thought that worked pretty well. It's just that they stopped us from scoring."

Anderson added 16 points and Robinson had 10 and six rebounds but also was in foul trouble throughout for the Spurs, who reached the 50-game plateau for the 11th time in franchise history.

Charlotte could not overcome the early deficit, shooting just 40 percent (31-of-76).

Mashburn had 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists but made just 8-of-21 shots and committed four of the Hornets' 15 turnovers.

Baron Davis scored 13 points, Elden Campbell added 12 and Wesley 11 for Charlotte, which fell three games behind New York for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Davis made 6-of-10 shots, but Campbell and Wesley combined to shoot 8-of-24.
