Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd is recognized as perhaps the NBA's best point guard because of his all-around ability. Now he's proving he can be a scoring machine.

In a classic display of carrying a team, Kidd scored 18 of his career-high 43 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 90-85 victory over the Houston Rockets.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Suns, who moved two games ahead of eighth-place Minnesota in the Western Conference playoff race and trail the Los Angeles Lakers, Portland and Dallas by just two in the loss column.

Averaging 26.6 points in his previous seven games -- 10 above his season average -- Kidd continued his aggressive approach, cranking up 34 shots and drilling five 3-pointers. In the fourth quarter, he was virtually unstoppable, scoring 16 straight points for his team.

"I knew I had to be close to my career high because I don't score that many points," Kidd said. "I didn't know how many I had until the horn went off. I didn't know I had 18 of our 23 points in the fourth. I was just trying to win the game."

"He's been playing at an MVP level the last two weeks," said Suns coach Scott Skiles. "He's making all the plays and is just phenomenal right now. This is his best stretch I've ever seen him play."

Kidd's previous career high was 38 points here on April 11, 1995, when he played for the Dallas Mavericks. His previous best for the Suns was 36 nine days ago in a 105-91 victory over Washington.

"My teammates have told me to be more offensive-minded," Kidd said. "Sometimes I need to be reminded to look for my shot. I've been more aggressive ever since."

"Even without the offense, he's probably the best point guard in the league," Suns forward Tom Gugliotta said. "Now that he's knocking down his shot, he's unguardable."

The Suns closed the third quarter with a 15-4 run to pull within 68-67. Mario Elie and Gugliotta, who finished with 11 points, ignited the spurt with 3-pointers and Kidd closed the quarter with a 3-pointer.

"We went to a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap in the third and that busted up their rhythm offensively," Skiles said. "They missed some shots and we got some quick points."

Kidd opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws to give Phoenix the lead, but Matt Bullard followed with a corner jumper for Houston.

After back-to-back turnaround baseline jumpers by Gugliotta, Kidd hit a 22-footer, giving the Suns a 75-70 lead with 9:24 left.

The Rockets scored the next seven points, capped by back-to-back baseline jumpers by Hakeem Olajuwon, and moved back ahead, 77-75 with 7:38 left.

Kidd scored on a driving layup and a short jumper, but the Rockets maintained their lead, 81-79, on a tip-in by Steve Francis with 5:33 left.

But Kidd would not be denied. He backed in Moochie Norris in the lane, and hit a turnaround from the baseline to tie the game. He followed with a foul line jumper to give Phoenix an 83-81 lead with 4:11 remaining.

"The problem is you can't double-team him because if you do that, he gets the other guys involved," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich.

The best evidence the night belonged to Kidd came when he banked in a 3-pointer from left of the top of the key as the shot clock was winding down with 3:22 left, giving the Suns an 86-81 advantage.

"He was definitely hot," said Francis, who was toasted by Kidd most of the night before fouling out in the fourth quarter. "I think the deciding factor was some of the shots he hit down the stretch."

After Houston pulled within 86-85 on a follow shot by Olajuwon with 1:42 remaining, Kidd hit a 20-footer from the right side with 1:29 left.

Rookie center Jake Tsakalidis blocked a shot by Olajuwon on Houston's ensuing possession and Kidd stole an errant pass by Francis with 22 seconds left.

Kidd and Mario Elie converted one free throw apiece and Kidd had another steal in the final 16 seconds to seal the win.

The loss severely damaged the playoff hopes of the Rockets, who fell 3 1/2 games behind Minnesota.

In his second game back after missing nine with a blood disorder, Olajuwon led the Rockets with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Afterwards, he appeared stunned by Kidd's scoring explosion.

"He's good but he's not that good. He didn't miss anything tonight," Olajuwon said.

Norris had 15 points off the bench for Houston. Francis and Cuttino Mobley had 13 points apiece but combined to shoot just 11-of-33 from the field.

Francis scored nine of his points in the first quarter when the Rockets built a 26-21 lead.

Norris had 11 of his points in the second quarter as the Rockets increased the advantage to 50-40.

Kidd scored 15 in the first half on just 6-of-17 shooting. But he was 10-of-17 from the field in the second half.
