Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Vince Carter woke up in the second half and realized his Toronto Raptors could not afford a loss to the New Jersey Nets.

Carter scored 27 points and Tracy Murray added 20 off the bench as the Raptors recovered for a 110-99 victory over the ailing Nets, their fourth straight triumph.

Toronto (40-32) moved one game ahead of the Orlando Magic for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Orlando lost 100-97 tonight at Detroit. The two teams face off Sunday in Toronto, before wrapping up the season series at Orlando April 6.

Carter had just seven points in the first half, when the Raptors allowed the Nets to shoot 61 percent (22-of-36) from the floor and grab a 57-56 lead.

The Nets still led 94-92 with 6:50 left on a 3-pointer by newly acquired IBL-CBA rookie Eddie Gill.

After three misses by the Raptors and two turnovers by the Nets, Carter took over and scored seven straight points in an 18-5 run that stretched to the end of the game.

"In the fourth quarter, we were able to step it up and execute," Carter said. "We knew they had nothing to lose."

"Vince Carter hit some big shots," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "No one is able to hold him for a whole game. He's one of those guys who can change a game by himself."

Doug Overton kept the Nets alive with a basket that quieted the crowd and pulled New Jersey within three with 2:41 left. But on the next possession, Murray nailed a 3-pointer from the right sideline to give the Raptors a 103-97 advantage with 2:24 left.

"I played some preseason games in Orlando," Gill said. "I feel like I can bring some intensity. It was disappointing to the whole team how we turned the ball over and missed shots in the fourth quarter. This is a game we could have won."

Johnny Newman's basket with 1:41 remaining cut the deficit to 104-99 but New Jersey did not score again. Antonio Davis and Alvin Williams each made a pair of free throws before a dunk by Jerome Williams closed the scoring.

The Nets had a nine-point lead in the third quarter. Lucious Harris converted a pair of free throws to give them a 71-62 advantage with seven minutes left.

But the Nets got comfortable as Alvin Williams scored eight points during a 14-2 run that gave Toronto a 76-73 lead with 2:55 to play.

"Everyone's been helping me and I'm feeling confident out on the court," Williams said. I try to feed off other players and my first job is to get the ball to Vince and Antonio. I take the shots that come to me and tonight, I had a lot of open looks that went down."

Williams scored a career-high 23 points for the Raptors, who have won 12 of their last 17 games.

Keith Van Horn scored 14 points in the first quarter and finished with 22 on 5-of-13 shooting. He went 11-of-12 from the line, but committed eight of the teams 18 turnovers.

"Our defensive intensity got us a lot of loose balls and turnovers," Carter said. "Jerome really contained Van Horn and we all helped him."

Newman scored a career-high 27 points for the injury-plagued Nets, who shot 49 percent (34-of-69) and lost guard Lucious Harris in the third quarter to a sore left ankle.

"Even though we're shorthanded, we've got to compete like we did tonight," Newman said. "I know my job is to step up and try to score."

Murray kept the Raptors in the game early.

"When you're coming off the bench, it is very important to be ready because we are the hired guns," Murray said. "That is my job, to shoot the ball."
