Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Bucks could not have picked a better way to kick off a six-game road trip.

The Bucks allowed only 27 points in the second half and shut down the league's best 3-point shooting team en route to an 86-77 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Sam Cassell scored 24 points for Milwaukee, which opened a six-game lead over second-place Charlotte in the Central Division with 10 to play and swept the Spurs for the second straight season.

"We wanted an up-tempo game," Cassell said. "Anytime we had an opportunity to push the ball, we took it. (Coach) George (Karl) did not want us to slow the game down until we were up with just two or three minutes to go."

The Bucks pulled within four games of idle Philadelphia for first place in the Eastern Conference.

The 27 second-half points matched a franchise low for the Spurs, who scored a season-low 12 in the third quarter and 15 in the fourth.

"We've been inconsistent defensively all year, but tonight we played a first-class defensive game," Karl said. "Physically, it was a battle and we rebounded with them. At the end, we actually had more offensive rebounds than they did."

San Antonio shot only 32 percent (22-of-79) from the field, including just 2-of-14 from beyond the arc.

"It was a tough loss against a good basketball team," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We did a great job holding them to 86 points. We weren't sharp and had too many turnovers (15). They got 17 fastbreak points on us. We looked tired at times."

After the contest was tied, 50-50, at halftime, Milwaukee took control in the third quarter, using an 18-4 run to open a 68-56 lead on Jason Caffey's jumper with 3:37 left in the period.

Caffey scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, including six straight for Milwaukee after the Spurs closed to 77-72 on two foul shots by David Robinson with seven minutes to play. Caffey's dunk gave the Bucks an 83-75 cushion with two minutes left.

"Nobody can take us lightly anymore," Bucks forward Glenn Robinson said. "We are gaining a lot of confidence right now. If we can beat teams like Utah and San Antonio on the road, then there is no reason to think we can't win on a big-time level."

Tim Duncan had 20 points and David Robinson 19 for the Spurs (51-22), who dropped to 30-7 at home. They came into the game tied with Sacramento for the best home record in the NBA.

Robinson moved into 33rd place on the NBA's all-time scoring list, passing former Los Angeles Lakers guard Gail Goodrich.

San Antonio's lead over the Kings for the best record in the Western Conference was reduced to one game, although the teams are even in the loss column.

Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen scored 14 points apiece for the Bucks, who beat the Spurs, 102-98, at home on February 19.

"Our shooting went from good (against Utah on Thursday) to bad," David Robinson said. "When you hold a team to 86 points, you should have a good chance to win the game."

San Antonio had numerous opportunities to get back into the game in the second half as Milwaukee shot only 39 percent (31-of-80). But the Spurs could not get their offense untracked. Duncan was just 6-of-20 from the field and Derek Anderson 3-of-17.

"They did a great job on Tim," Popovich said. "Our execution was not very good. We were sloppy in our handling of the ball. Our slopiness, mixed with their energy, made for a bad game."

San Antonio closed to 73-70 on two foul shots by Antonio Daniels with 8:19 to go, but Scott Williams foul-line jumper and Caffey's hook shot high off the glass made it 77-70 with 7:13 remaining.
