Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Elden Campbell's prayer dealt the Boston Celtics' playoff hopes a major blow.

Campbell's off-balanced hook shot in the lane with nine seconds remaining gave the Charlotte Hornets an 80-79 victory over the Celtics, who squandered an eight-point lead in the final four minutes.

Opening a three-game road trip, Boston appeared to overcome a 5:20 scoring drought at the start of the first quarter, building a 76-68 lead on Eric Williams' jumper with 4:10 left.

Instead, the Celtics suffered their second straight disappointing loss and remained tied with Indiana for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Pacers, who won at Boston on Friday, completed a five-game road trip Sunday with a 104-93 loss in Philadelphia.

"They doubled Mash (Jamal Mashburn) and I was wide-open on that last play," Campbell said. "It was closed down, but I was able to get the ball and knock down the last shot. Tonight, we found a way to win."

As Campbell got the ball, he slipped and nearly fell. But he flipped a shot over Boston guard Milt Palacio that hit nothing but net.

"I thought our defense was as tough as you could get," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "The Hornets played one point harder than we did."

"Elden Campbell made the shot at the end," added Boston forward Eric Williams. "I don't even think he was looking."

The Celtics had a chance to win it, but Baron Davis blocked Palacios' layup and grabbed the rebound as the buzzer sounded. O'Brien and the Celtics screamed for a foul on the play.

"There were a lot of times when they let a lot go," O'Brien said. "It's tough, when you play so hard, get to the end, to see things like that happen. It's tough to swallow. I definitely thought I got hit."

David Wesley scored 21 points and Davis added 10 for the Hornets, who snapped a four-game losing streak and reduced to one their magic number for clinching a playoff spot.

"We knew we had to come out with a lot of intensity today to match Boston," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "We've been playing bad basketball lately, so it was important to come out with a big effort."

Charlotte shot only 39 percent (31-of-79) from the field but held Boston to 35 percent (27-of-77).

"We knew at some point we would break out of this slump," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "The thing I liked most was we played good defensively. The last few games we were giving up over 90 points per game, but tonight we held them below 80."

Antoine Walker scored 25 points for the Celtics, but Paul Pierce struggled through his second straight subpar game, scoring just 12 points on 3-of-19 shooting. He made only 8-of-23 shots in Friday's 92-87 setback to the Pacers.

Vitaly Potapenko picked up the slack for the Celtics, matching a season high with 16 points. Like Friday, however, Boston showed it is not an effective team when Pierce is off his game. He averaged 30.3 points in 15 March contests.

"Neither team was playing good basketball, but both teams kept fighting," Brown said. "I thought we played great defense tonight. We took them out of a lot of their sets. We rebounded well, which is a key for us."

The Celtics were aware that Indiana had lost, but they came out flat and fell behind 11-0 before finally scoring with 6:40 left in the first period.

Boston regrouped, rallied for a 41-36 halftime lead and maintained it for most of the second half. After Charlotte closed to 69-68 on Wesley's jumper with 6:31 to go, the Celtics reeled off seven straight points and opened a 76-68 lead on Williams' 3-pointer with 4:10 left.

But Wesley's 3-pointer and layup made it 76-73 with 2:45 remaining. Mashburn made 1-of-2 from the line before his turnaround 18-footer tied it with 1:09 to play.

Two foul shots by Pierce gave the Celtics a 78-76 lead with 56 seconds to go, but Boston left Davis wide-open for a tying layup on the ensuing possession. Walker provided an opening for Charlotte by making only 1-of-2 from the line with 19 seconds left.
