Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse dunked off the opening tip and things just kept getting worse for the lowly Golden State Warriors.

Stackhouse scored 15 of his 32 points in the first quarter as the Detroit Pistons built an early lead and coasted to a 104-87 victory over the Warriors, who have lost four straight and 15 of their last 16 games.

Joe Smith added 19 points against his former team and Chucky Atkins had 17 for Detroit, which posted consecutive wins for just the third time since New Year's Day. The Pistons have won five of their last seven at home and avenged a 103-95 road loss eight days ago.

"Every time I play these guys, it's personal to me," Smith said. "At the game out there, I didn't play particularly well, didn't shoot the ball well. I made a conscious effort to go out there and be as aggressive as I could and stay focused and knock down the shots."

Adonal Foyle scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Golden State, which shot 34 percent (34-of-100) from the field and suffered its eighth consecutive road loss.

"We had breakdowns mentally early in the game," admitted Warriors coach Dave Cowens. "Our first jump ball, we gave up a layup and the next thing, a guy runs out and we give up another layup. Their first three possessions were layups."

Behind Stackhouse and Atkins, who had 12 points in the opening quarter, Detroit took a 35-24 lead after 12 minutes. It shot nearly 62 percent (13-of-21) from the field while holding the Warriors under 31 percent (8-of-26).

"We wanted a good effort and be the aggressors here at home, coming off a big win against Orlando," Atkins said. "We wanted to set the tempo, both offensively and defensively."

"It's strange when a guy gets a layup off the opening tip. You can tell from the get-go that we were out of sync," said Golden State forward Antawn Jamison, who scored 18 points on 6-of-22 shooting. "It's frustrating to be out there, but it was one of those games that you have as an individual and as a team. And we had both tonight."

Jamison also praised Stackhouse, who also played collegiately at North Carolina.

"He is an All-Star and you understand that. That's one thing I like about Stack," Jamison said. "No matter what's in the win-loss column or how many you're up or down, he's always going to play hard. And I really respect him for that."

A 17-foot jumper by rookie Mateen Cleaves stretched Detroit's lead to 45-24 just 2 1/2 minutes into second quarter and the Pistons took a 63-46 lead into intermission.

"I'll take the wins any way they come," said Cleaves, who had four points, seven rebounds and four assists. "I'm a winner. Anytime we get a win, I'm happy. Thank God the starters came out and played the way they did to give us a comfort level."

A 3-pointer by Jamison got the Warriors within 63-51 in the opening minute of the third quarter, but the Pistons held Golden State without a basket for the next four minutes while scoring nine straight points.

"We didn't shoot very well tonight," Cowens said. "I thought we got a lot more shots than they did, but we just couldn't get them to go down. That's been the story all year. It just wasn't a very good game for us."

Detroit was outrebounded, 50-47, despite 16 boards from Ben Wallace.

"Ben is a big part of this team," Atkins said. "People don't understand just because he does not score a lot, but he does all of the other things we need to do as far as rebounding and good defense."
