Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- After back-to-back poor performances, Paul Pierce has put the Boston Celtics back on his shoulders.

Pierce scored his team's final seven points and Boston finished with a 20-3 run to remain tied with Indiana for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with an 82-77 victory over the Miami Heat.

After shooting just 11-of-42 from the floor in his last two contests, Pierce made 11-of-23 shots, including three straight jumpers that buried the Heat, who scored just three points in the final seven minutes. Pierce finished with 33 points and nine rebounds.

"I have to be aggressive all around whether I am on or off I have to stick to my game throughout," Pierce said. "They showed tremendous confidence in me, giving me the ball down the stretch, and I wanted to deliver."

"Paul always wants the ball and whether he wants it or not he's going to get it," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "It's tough to stop his shot. When he is hot, he is very difficult to guard."

Miami seemed to have put away the game with a 32-6 run bridging the third and fourth quarters. The run included the first 12 points of the final period, which gave Miami a 74-62 lead with 7:47 to go.

"When we went down with seven minutes to go, we came back out with the attitude that we were not going to lose this game," Pierce said. "We showed heart when we came out in the fourth quarter. It showed tremendous character by this ballclub."

After missing its first nine shots of the fourth, Boston made seven of its next eight and reclaimed the lead for good, 77-76, on a jumper by Pierce with 2:55 remaining. He sank back-to-back jumpers on the Celtics' next two possessions and the Heat could not answer at the other end.

"It's disconcerting from the fact that we should be at the stage where we close games," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Everyone was chest-bumping, hooping and hollering. They thought the game was over but we were only up 14. It's very, very disappointing."

Antoine Walker had 20 points and five assists and Bryant Stith added eight points and seven rebounds for Boston, which improved to 1-1 on a three-game road trip that takes them to Orlando on Wednesday.

"Our captains showed terrific leadership," O'Brien said of Walker and Pierce. "They really rallied the troops to make them beleive they can come back. This was a very impressive win for us."

The Heat shot just 33 percent (5-of-15) in the final 12 minutes and 41 percent (30-of-72) overall.

Anthony Mason scored 16 points and Brian Grant added 14 and six rebounds, but committed six turnovers before fouling out for the Heat, who fell one-half game behind New York for the No. 3 spot in the Eastern Conference.

Alonzo Mourning scored in double digits for the second straight game with 11 points and pulled down four rebounds in 23 minutes.

"I'm not concerned with me," said Mourning, who returned from a kidney disorder on March 27. "I am going to be be all right; move the focus off of me. We're 1-3 since I've been back and it's unacceptable."

Pierce scored six of his 12 first-half points during a 15-6 run that opened a 45-36 lead with 50 seconds left. The Celtics led 45-38 at halftime, overcoming eight turnovers by shooting 53 percent (17-of-32).

The Celtics opened the second half on an 11-4 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Walker and Pierce, to take a 56-42 lead with 7:40 left in the third quarter before Miami caught fire.
