Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn scored 31 points and P.J. Brown added 19 and 12 rebounds as the Charlotte Hornets cruised to a 103-88 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Five players scored in double figures for the Hornets, who took their fourth straight victory over the Nets, including three this season.

New Jersey pulled within 78-74 on Evan Eschmeyer's lay-up with 11:22 left but got no closer as Charlotte used a 23-10 run to pull away. The Hornets opened their largest lead at 101-84 when Mashburn got a runner to fall with 2 1/2 minutes to play.

"When things become easy in the game, we kind of lost focus a little bit," Mashburn said, who scored all 16 first-half points in the first quarter. "We lost focus and then we had to get back on track."

Neither team shot well from the arc. Charlotte went 3-of-10 and the Nets 3-of-11 for just 27 percent. They also nearly matched each other on the boards, with the Hornets holding the 44-43 advantage.

"They kept pounding the boards on us," said Nets guard Lucious Harris, who grabbed 10 rebounds. "Sooner or later, giving them two or three shots at the basket, they're going to make one of them and that's what they did."

"We didn't have a good flow tonight," Nets swingman Johnny Newman said. "The guys are still giving an effort some guys don't know the offense. You need everything working on a night like this, we didn't have it."

Baron Davis added 17 points and Eddie Robinson 12 off the bench for Charlotte, which shot 48 percent (40-of-83) from the field.

Hornets forward Derrick Coleman returned to the lineup after missing 20 games with a strained left calf. Charlotte is just 9-19 with Coleman, who had four points and one rebound in 10 minutes.

"I think with eight games left and practices I should be ready to go," Coleman said. "Playoff basketball is a whole different level. When this time of year comes around you've got to step up and be ready to play."

Newman scored 26 points and Keith Van Horn added 25 for the ailing Nets, who scored just 16 points in the final period. They shot 39 percent (34-of-86), giving up 16 points on 14 turnovers.

"To me there wasn't really too many good things that came out of this game," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "I thought that we played really bad. I thought we did not play smart at all. We did not get back transition-wise, we got outhustled in the hustle department and that is what we talked about at halftime and before the game."

The Nets were trying to win back-to-back games for the first time in nearly two months. New Jersey has not won consecutive games since February 18-21.
