Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs may have dealt a knockout punch to the Seattle SuperSonics.

Duncan scored 30 points and the league-leading Spurs cruised to a 107-89 victory over the SuperSonics, whose playoff hopes took a severe hit.

Duncan made 11-of-17 shots and continued his resurgence at the line by making 8-of-8 free throws. He did most of his damage in the second half, scoring 18 points after the Spurs built a 51-33 halftime lead and lost David Robinson to tightness in his lower back.

The superstar power forward had a hand in the second-quarter outburst that saw the Spurs turn a 20-17 lead into an 18-point halftime advantage, scoring six points early in the period to help San Antonio open a double-digit lead.

"They threw a bunch of different lineups at us tonight to try and change the momentum of the game," said Duncan, who also had 14 rebounds and five blocks. "I thought we were able to stay strong and throw it back at them."

Seattle was without center Patrick Ewing, who was sidelined with a lower back strain. Reserve forward Jelani McCoy also could not go and it forced the SuperSonics to go with a small lineup.

"It was an odd game with some odd matchups in the second half," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Tim had a great game and Avery (Johnson) did a great job running the show."

After an awful first half, the SuperSonics got within single digits for just 19 seconds in the second half. They never made a serious push and had their four-game winning streak snapped.

"I thought our small unit did good for us, but Tim just totally dominated the floor on the offensive end and defensively he was a presence," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "He intimidated some of our attempts at the basket."

The loss was just the second in 12 games for Seattle (41-35) but pushed it 3 1/2 games behind Minnesota -- five in the loss column -- for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference. The Sonics have just six games remaining.

"We knew this game would be tough," McMillan said.

Derek Anderson scored 16 points and Johnson had 10 assists for the Spurs, who shot 56 percent (41-of-73) and made 19-of-22 free throws. They helped the Spurs win without Robinson, who will be evaluated Wednesday.

"He tweaked his back, so we sent him home," said Popovich. "We didn't want him sitting around. He should be fine."

"You always want to play with all of your horses," Anderson added. "But it was good to see guys be able to come in and step up."

Gary Payton and Rashard Lewis each scored 23 points and Payton handed out 10 assists for Seattle, which shot 44 percent (35-of-79) and was outrebounded, 40-31.

"They're probably playing the best basketball of any team in the last three to four weeks," said Sonics forward Vin Baker, who scored 10 points and had his hands full with Duncan.

Duncan's surge at the outset of the second quarter helped San Antonio open a 28-17 lead with 8:55 left. Seattle closed to 30-23 on Payton's jumper before Anderson scored five points in a 16-5 run. His dunk made it 46-28 with 2:07 to go.

Seattle pulled within 62-53 on a layup by Shammond Williams with 5:45 left in the third quarter. Danny Ferry, who scored 10 points, answered with a 3-pointer 19 seconds later and the lead remained double digits thereafter.
