Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Vince Carter scored 32 points, including six free throws down the stretch, as the Toronto Raptors clinched a playoff berth with a 97-94 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Carter made 11-of-25 shots from the floor and 6-of-6 from the line as Toronto defeated Cleveland for the ninth straight time and locked up the franchise's second straight postseason berth.

Antonio Davis had 19 points and seven rebounds and Keon Clark added 16 and eight in 23 minutes off the bench for the Raptors, who shot 43.5 percent (37-of-85).

"You have to fight through these kinds of games," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "When you let a team hang in the game like we did they're going to find a way to win. I thought we had a lot of missed opportunities in the first quarter when we settled for the outside shot too often. You've got to move it swing it and penetrate. We didn't do any of that."

The Raptors held an 90-79 lead after Clark made a basket with 4:54 remaining. Toronto missed its final five shots but Carter did not miss from the line and Charles Oakley made 1-of-2 free throws for the final margin with 6.9 seconds left.

"Hopefully our team's intensity is on a high level," Carter said. "But when we are at our low, it's our lowest. Tonight we weren't at our best, but we weren't at our worst, either."

Cleveland had two chances to tie the score. With the Raptors holding a 96-94 advantage, Carter was called for an offensive foul with 16 seconds left. But after a timeout, Andre Miller missed a driving layup and Oakley got the rebound.

The Cavaliers tried to set up another play after Oakley's free throw, but Chris Gatling threw away the ball after taking the inbounds pass.

"For the most part I think we played with a lot of energy, a lot of heart and effort," Gatling said. "We missed a couple of free throws that could have given us a cushion, so I didn't have to worry about throwing that pass out of bounds and so we didn't have to gamble with a last-second shot. Overall I give us a B-plus tonight."

Oakley made just 2-of-8 shots but led the Raptors with 12 rebounds.

Clarence Weatherspoon had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Wesley Person scored 16 points for Cleveland, which shot 43 percent (36-of-84) in its fifth straight loss.

Miller had 11 points and 13 assists and Gatling contributed 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench as the Cavaliers were officially eliminated from the playoffs.

"It's disappointing but you still have to finish the season off right and that can be taken into the next year to make myself a better player," Miller said.

Carter scored 21 points in the first half, when the Raptors shot 49 percent (22-of-45) and brought a 51-50 edge into the locker room.

Cleveland scored nine straight points and took its biggest lead, 64-60, when Miller hit a 12-footer with 5:21 remaining in the third period. Clark had two blocked shots and a pair of dunks to give Toronto a 75-70 lead entering the final period.

The Cavs got within 77-74 when Gatling hit an 18-footer with 8:45 to go. Dell Curry, who had eight points off the bench, made a 3-pointer to spark a 9-1 burst. Clark made 1-of-2 from the line to cap it, giving Toronto an 86-75 lead with 6:57 remaining.
